Felix Cartal – Different Faces

2012 marks an important year for Felix Cartal, as the first single off DIFFERENT FACES, his new album has demonstrated, his sound has matured into simply put: memorable music. This single, titled “Don’t Turn On The Lights”, featuring a vocal from Ultra Music topliner Polina, has already garnered support from MTV, BPM (Sirius XM) and Muchmusic, who have all added the video and song into heavy rotation.

Not wanting to slow down, Cartal maintains an aggressive release schedule leading up to the drop date of DIFFERENT FACES, his second album for Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records in late March 2012. The second single “DOMO” taps into aggressive sounds and Japanese pop culture, whereas the third single “Black To White” featuring Miss Palmer falls back onto the pop influences of the first single. Branded with cute girls, b&w photography and red balloons, the concept for the album is strong, consistent and memorable.

Growing up in Vancouver, Felix’s initial mark on the dance scene was with his debut EP in 2009 Skeleton. Steve Aoki and MSTRKRFT were some of the earliest supporters of Cartal’s sound, and he released his debut LP Popular Music on Aoki’s Dim Mak Records. The record featured several big tunes such as “Love” which was featured on the I Love Techno 2010 compilation, “World Class Driver,” which startled the internet with the video’s shocking take on seniors amongst the drug scene, and “Volcano” which featured vocals from an unlikely collab of Johnny Whitney from post-hardcore stars The Blood Brothers.

In 2011, Felix progressed his sound with a surprise hit “The Jocker” which found its way into the sets of anyone from Benny Benassi to Diplo to Laidback Luke. Transcending across all scenes of dance music, this tune was remixed by the likes of John Dahlback and Clouds (TURBO), and helped push Felix into both the American and European festival circuit, securing slots at Electric Daisy Carnival, Tomorrowland and the mainstage of Electric Zoo.

After that full year of relentless touring, Cartal returns to what he loves to do, which is create full albums, and DIFFERENT FACES does not disappoint. A balance of instrumental and vocal tracks keeps the record interesting and energetic. Enlisting the vocals of Sebastien Grainger of DFA1979 and Maja Ivarsson of The Sounds, Cartal continues his trend of collaborating with unpredictable vocalists in the dance scene. The product sounds effortless though, a mix of different ideas, made for different ears on different faces.

Ajapai – Power and Press the Button

Ajapai is easily one of the sickest dubstep producers on the scene. Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, the music he conjures up is like no other–a constant barrage of unique noises tailored to be a pure assault of the senses right from the get go. His first dubstep release “What Do You Hear?” hit #3 on the Beatport charts and put him firmly on the map as a force not to be reckoned with. It wasn’t long before he joined the growing stable of talent on Rottun Recordings. He also started up his own label, Ajapai Entertainment, which to date has numerous successes including a remix of “Incoming” ended up getting #1 on Beatport’s Drum & Bass chart. It even went on to secure a Beatport Annual award, which is testament to the fact that this man means business.

Ajapai’s EP’s on Rottun has absolutely floored audiences all over the world and has charted amazingly well, consistently landing in the Top 3 on the Dubstep charts. His 2011 release “Before The Sun” with Excision and Downlink hit No.1 on that chart. Over the last couple of years, Ajapai has toured internationally in Europe, Canada, and America. The complete and utter destruction he releases on dance floors can only be understood by witnessing his DJ sets live for yourself. With a style like no other and a commitment to quality, it is guaranteed that the only direction for Ajapai to go is straight up!!!

Joachim Garraud & Alesia – Hillside West

How Joachim Garraud & Alesia met?! It’s actually the first question that everybody is asking all the time!
Actually the story is short and funny! Alesia contacted Joachim for remixing one of Joachim’s tracks. Joachim was so enthusiastic of what ALESIA did on his track that he asked them back to work on some music together.

They locked themselves in a studio for several months and gave birth to this very exciting new project called “HILLSIDE WEST”!

This album is made up of 7 original tracks, including different styles such as House, Dubstep, Fidget, Rock, Electro, Complextro…

The idea of this brand new album was to mix the 2 universes of both artists and to share their same passion in sound design and research of new sonorities to introduce a new level of electronic music.

The Hillside West album release is already scheduled for late March. From this first collaboration between JOACHIM GARRAUD & ALESIA, the first single “HOOK” will come out on the 6th of March.

Hook is already supported by Angger Dimas, Bassjackers, Dillon Francis, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, Martin Solveig, Bingo Players, Tristan Garner, Junior Sanchez and many others.

The culminating months of 2011 saw Joachim Garraud hunkered down in his Paris studio with freshly discovered production trio, Alesia. Amidst his global tour schedule, Joachim collaborated with his three fellow Frenchmen on a ‘made-for-the-dancefloor’ release, debuting a new aural direction from Joachim – seamlessly blending Electro, Techno, Progressive House, and Dubstep.

‘Hook,’ the first single off of the upcoming Hillside West EP, is a perfect dichotomy of a House anthem married with snarling bass never heard on any other Joachim Garraud production. Slated for Beatport release the 6th of March and the 13th for all other retailers, ‘Hook’ as already received massive support from the world’s top DJs

Purcahse:

This is the first instalment of the two part Collapse of History EP, with the second to follow in April.
Alec Empire: “Our new single is called Collapse of History! It is an anthem for our generation. Information overload in the digital age. The track has a big war chant, which went down extremely well with festival crowds since we started playing it live. Can’t wait to perform this at Coachella!!!

We have just finished our video (online) for the track in Paris with a great cast of actors. The location of the shoot was a mental institution in the suburbs. It was wild!!!

It’s another single that is sung by Nic Endo who takes ATR into a new direction. B52s, L7, riot grrrl, Blondie, Deee-Lite were an inspiration. I had to do forty over- dubs, because we thought it would be funny to have a little army of Alec Empire clones singing along. The biggest inspiration for this song was probably the Atari video game classic Pong.

We did a remix contest, AND also got official remixes done by a number of amazing producers! The next two months of our campaign will focus on Collapse Of History! We are putting out this full on remix EP first, then will follow it up with the single later. It’s perfect for DJs to spin.”

Remixers include Christine (who have worked with Amon Tobin and Nag Nag Nag), StereoHeroes (M.I.A. and Pony Pony Run Run remixes), Shark- slayer (releases on the Kitsune and Yes, Yes labels), and Twist The Black Box (noted for work with Diplo and Teeth).
