Dim Mak Presents: Skrillex & Alvin Risk, Live at Dim Mak Studios

Tim Gauthier

“Skrillex’s six night hometown tour began yesterday, when the local boy-done-good held court before a sold out crowd at Cinespace. It might have seemed like an unusual venue choice; he normally plays for thousands at festivals, while Cinespace is an intimate spot where you often catch DJs hanging out at the bar.

But the Hollywood venue — home to Dim Mak’s famed Tuesday night parties — strongly influenced a young Sonny Moore back in the mid-’00s. As he noted last night, without the party and its founder Steve Aoki, there wouldn’t be a Skrillex.”

Florida’s Alligator Features Felix Cartal As “The Next Big Thing In EDM”

Tim Gauthier

“I’ve always loved electronic music, even as a child. I have memories of jamming out to Benny Benassi’s “Rock ‘N’ Rave” album in the car with my grandmother on my way home from middle school. It’s funny to think that now everywhere I look, I see a reflection of my younger music years. Not to say that I don’t indulge in that type of music any more, because I do — probably way more than I should. With that said, I would like to focus this week’s Sound Drip on an EDM producer whom I feel deserves a bit more time in the spotlight: Felix Cartal.”

Meet Robert Raimon Roy Through His World, As He Finds It

Tim Gauthier

Robert Raimon Roy (formerly Rob Roy) was discovered in 2005 by Erykah Badu, when upon hearing his 1st album, Dollar Out of 15 Cents, invited the multi-talented rapper/singer/producer/visual artist to meet at her renowned Black Forest Theater in Dallas, Texas. In late 2006, Roy was also co-signed by Southern heavyweight, Bigga Rankin (VP of Young Jeezy’s CTE label) and presented with a Diamond Hood Award. In the years that followed, Roy began work on his sophomore record, King Warrior Magician Lover, and moved to Los Angeles, CA from his native Jacksonville, FL. He released the first video from KWML, “Fur In My Cap,” to much viral success; the clip appeared on Kanye West’s personal blog, and also received praise from Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake, Travis Barker, Chris Brown, and Questlove of The Roots. The initial stream of the album would garner 800,000 plays in one week, and a flurry of major label attention soon followed. Roy would subsequently be featured on HBO’s “Entourage,” and in spreads for NYLON Guys and Giant Magazine.

An all-around artist, Roy also collaborated with the independent fashion label, Love Brigade, and released his own customized sneakers—an all-black, deconstructed take on Converse hi-tops. These shoes would later be featured in Antenna Magazine, as well as on Justin Timberlake’s personal blog, and sold at exclusive boutiques for a limited run in both New York and Los Angeles. In 2010, Roy signed with Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records, was hand-picked for the annual music issue of the esteemed literary magazine, The Believer, and released what URB Magazine would later proclaim as the “Best Video of 2010″ with “Carmencita.” Shortly thereafter, he began work on his third album, Le Tigre Blanc, and hit the road for a number of Scion-sponsored US tour dates in the summer of 2011. Recently, inspired by a change in artistic direction, Roy also changed his stage moniker; “Rob Roy” having been replaced by his full birth name, “Robert Raimon Roy.” In his own words, “I am not: rapper, singer, or even musician. I am: collagist, information curator, short story writer, social entrepreneur, and editor.” The self-titled first single, “Robert Raimon Roy,” will be released in spring 2012, followed by Le Tigre Blanc in the fall.

Felix Cartal’s “Domo” Video Is Now Live, Via ARTISTdirect

Tim Gauthier

“The song itself is emblematic of Cartal’s brilliant ability to incorporate a myriad of EDM styles into his own infectious sound, and it’s a perfect prelude to his new full-length masterpiece, Different Faces. Cartal is one of the world’s most exciting and entrancing electronic music artisans, and once you meet “Domo”, he’s never going to leave your side.” – Rick Florino, ARTISTdirect.com
