Holland Days with Jamal: an Interview with Bloody Beetroots

March 14, 2013 Tim Gauthier Interviews Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

We’re proud to present a new section on the Dim Mak blog called “Holland Days with Jamal”. In these weekly series our newest intern Jamal will interview various artists and at the same time learn a lot about the American culture and the Dim Mak family.

Jamal’s latest interview is with Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo a.k.a. Bloody Beetroots. He did this interview as part of his blog series on The Kool Kids. He has just released a new single “Chronicles Of A Fallen Love” featuring the haunting vocal of Greta Svabo Bech on Ultra Records, available here. Preview the video here.

The new Live tour just started. How is this different compared to before?
It actually started in January at the Big Day Out in Australia. The differences are substantial in terms of sound pressure, light design, stage, songs and i have musicians on rotation. I’m performing 8 new tracks during these live shows, and yes, thats because there’s a new album coming out along with the tour. It’s a whole evolution in a show. It started with The Bloody Beetroots DJ-Set, then i did Death Crew 77 and then Church of Noise and now it’s The Bloody Beetroots LIVE.

I believe evolution is necessary to express yourself.

You’re having a new mask with this tour?
Yes, it is very similar to the old one but has been majorly improved and equipped with technology.. Each eye has one hundred Nano LEDS controlled through Wi-Fi from side stage using software called “Q”. It took me months to create.

Is it comparable to the masks of Danger and Deadmau5?
No not at all. It’s way more subtle. It has an atmospheric ambience, which shows the energy… visually. It feels sinister. I’ve been wearing it now since January starting with my first performance in Australia and I received some great feedback from people all over the world. I even have a mask solo during my performances. Shouting on stage alone wasn’t enough.

I believe evolution is necessary to express yourself

Last year you started the Gazette?
The Gazette is the official and exclusive source of everything that is happening inside the Bloody Beetroots Machine, it will be relaunched in the coming months with a new design.

But Speaking of web platforms, the real novelty for me this year was relaunching Church Of Noise.
Which is a collaboration with US developers, Backplane, who are the innovators of the software behind Lady Gaga’s Little Monsters, they have developed the same technology for relaunching my community making it definitely interactive with Soundcloud, Youtube, pictures etc. Go have a look, it’s awesome:

You once did a collaboration with Steve Aoki called “Rifoki”. Was this a one time thing?
This is a funny one, as we had some spare time and that’s how this project kicked off. Even though it was a side-project, I played “Sperm Donor” like hundreds of times during my old Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77 sets.

But that project is currently paused because I’m spending all my energy on taking the Bloody Beetroots to another level.

Would you say Bloody Beetroots become more soft and more melodic?
I don’t agree. The new album contains a lot of songs that are probably some of the most varied and darkest music ever written for this project but there will be room for melody. The world of Bloody Beetroots is very wide and there was never a specific musical direction, I just make music.

Is Edward (Grinch) still in the band?
Yeah he is, he’s playing drums actually.
There are a lot of people involved in the new Bloody Beetroots Live, I have lots of musicians on rotation!
It’s all about music… you know.

Three years ago on the first Bloody Beetroots website you posted a track called “Warp 1981” and took it off 10 minutes after. Did you do this on purpose?
Yes I did! Funny huh?

The world of Bloody Beetroots is very wide and there was never a specific musical direction, I just make music

What can you tell us about the beautiful things in Bassano del Grappa?
I don’t spend much time there, it’s just a place for friends and family. But it’s beautiful and peaceful, the perfect place to chill after all the stress of touring.

I believe “SPANK” isn’t released yet?
Yeah, I think it’s being released in March on Ultra Records. It’s a great track, if you come to one of my shows you’ll see the reaction. When i first played it in Australia the crowd went crazy. People are still asking about this track 2 months later.

It’s very powerful with a lot of elements from the past, such as gospel, techno… I love referencing music that influences me. You’ll be able to hear it soon.

How’s your designing going? Are you working on new shirts with Vendetta?
Vendetta is busy becoming a real fashion brand. We did a collaboration in the past and they still make exclusuve jackets for me but we’re both growing up as bands.
About merchandise… I’m trying to push all the singles as t-shirts, with really strong imagery and the logos.
I’ll shortly release the first SBCR masks which are designed exactly like the mask that I currently use with framed eyes and hi quality fabric, easy to wash and wear and which are the exact same masks as the band are wearing on stage… watch this space.

Is Dennis (Lyxzén) still a part of Church of Noise?
Yeah, definitely. It’s a two-man creation developed by Dennis and me.

I’ve read that every track starts with a title. So my question is; What kind of titles are popping in your head right now?
I’m not allowed to say that at the moment. There are a lot things going on in my chaotic mind and some are about the album. If you come to the show I’ll give you a taster of what’s in my mind.

In our first interview you mentioned you want to release two more “Spares of Romborama”. What happened to it?
Sometimes my ideas collide with the reality of my own brand and what im creating. I can say that I have a lot of music to be released. One day I’ll release them all, even those spares.

How far do you think ahead?
I always think about the future, 4 or 5 years ahead… That said things do change quickly and I need to express so many things that are happening. I just think everything requires time and patience.

Out Now: Dan Sena – Eternity EP

March 12, 2013 Tim Gauthier Music Tags: , ,

Eternity EP is a conscious musical progression for me. The sound is much more refined than the previous Candy Floss Art Capitalist EP from 2011, but still gritty. I’m reaching back and infusing the sounds that got me excited about music in the first place, like punk, hardcore, and rock.

A Night In Review: Flosstradamus @ Club Nokia

March 7, 2013 Tim Gauthier Lifestyle, Music Tags: , , , , ,

“Club Nokia was the epicenter of Trap music Friday night, with big-time performances from AraabMuzik and Flosstradamus. There were also other great opening sets by Congorock, gLAdiator, Noizfiend, Alex Bustamove, and Mature Content. The night was full of the hard hitting bass and sway inducing beats that have become synonymous with the Trap sound. Araabmuzik was first to kick off the night and he didn’t disappoint.

Araabmuzik is the type of DJ who is so solid, that you know you’re going to have a good time no matter what when you listen to his music live. One of the reasons for this sure thing is that Araabmuzik mixes live using a MPC and so everything you are hearing is coming live from his hands to the speakers and then straight to your ears. Because every drum kick and sample is mixed live, it makes for a different type of set, where the beats and rhythm are on showcase instead of any big name song drops.

He opened his set with one of his tracks “Never Have to Worry,” and immediately the crowd started to get into what was a great constant track-to-track dance party. Araabmuzik showed great variety throughout the whole set, starting with slow deep bass only to speed up the tempo and then drop right back into a monster bass drop. Araab danced the night away while mixing but he never took his hands off the table and you could tell he enjoyed performing just as much as the audience enjoyed listening.  Towards the end of his set he introduced some noticeable tracks like Nero’s “Promises,” and Biz Markie’s “Let Me Clear My Throat.” All-in-all Araabmuzik’s set was a good mix of trap and other quicker electro beats.

Next up on the deck was headliner Flosstradamus. The DJ-duo is known for their hard hitting trap sets and that is exactly what they delivered. It was both a classic and unique set as the DJS dropped popular Trap tracks as well as some remixes that were unexpected. They opened up with Lana Del Rey’s “Videogames” and then mixed right into “Bugatti” by Ace Hood. Things got especially turned up when they dropped a trap remix of “Face Down, Ass Up” by Meek Mill and then launched into “What’s Your Fantasy” by Ludacris. In fact, Flosstradamus threw the beat down so hard during a mix of a new song with DJ Slink that the power actually blew out for a minute.

After the technical difficulty the duo launched back seamlessly into their set and hyped up the crowd with a remix of “Jah No Partial” by Major Lazer featuring Flux Pavillion. The rest of the set was a bevy of trap classics from Rick Ross, Waka Flacka, and Chief Keef to name a few. The highlight of the night was definitely when they dropped RL Grimes remix of “Satisfaction” by Benni Benassi and then spun right into a mix of Kanye West’s “Mercy,” and the classic techno song “Sandstrom,” by Darude.

Flosstradamus kept spinning through the night as they disappeared behind the fog that was being shot out in front of the DJ booth. When the lights hit the fog, it made them look even more awesome, as if they were illuminated in a cloudy rainbow of epic-ness.

It was a great night for trap music and EDM fans, and the crowd at Club Nokia seemed to be pleased, as they stayed through the night and seemed to dance forever.”  – Jenna Browning

#DimMakDIY – Featuring Lacy (Dirtyphonics Edition)

February 26, 2013 Tim Gauthier Fashion Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Its not too uncommon to see women shaving their heads now a days. Natalie Portman rocked it, So did Amber Rose, and even with her baby bump she still looks bomb. It can be considered a bold statement and often prominently displays confidence. I mean yeah, you might end up going crazy and try to stab people with an umbrella but unless you’re like that you should be fine. Anyways, our girlfriend Lacy is one of these women, and if you’ve spotted her at any of our events, you can already tell she brings the party and turns hairy heads. She was such a sweetheart and asked that I would photograph her going all out no clipper guard for what turned out to be a great evening of shooting some awesome photos. After all the the hair was gone (off her head and all over the floor and sink), and still excited to keep cutting, she turned the scissors on one of our new Dirtyphonics tees and with a little DIY, went custom for the night. We strongly encourage this behavior so show us your best DIY custom Dim Mak merch!

What happens in Vegas, ends up all over the internet and Vegas is no longer safe, which works out great as it served for a perfect location to have ourselves a little party. We teamed up with Joyrich for a cake filled celebration at The Act Nightclub in Las Vegas, where we showed off some of our new Dim Mak x Joyrich collab “Let Them Eat Cake” merch.
