Is there any sound so tough that a U.K. garage refix can’t turn into something pliable and seductive? Apparently, not, at least judging from the Los Angeles producer Kastle’s remix of “Hanging on Me,” a new song from the French quartet Dirtyphonics. Their recent singles have typically trod the line between headbanging and Ed Banging: “No Stopping Us,” featuring Foreign Beggars, was hip-house via Alice in Chains, while “Walk in the Fire” was forged of blast beats and chugging metal guitars. “Hanging on Me” is similar, marrying Master of Puppets-inspired twinned leads to a shuddering, dubsteppy cadence and topping it off with vocals from the Duke Spirit’s Liela Moss, who here sounds, improbably but intriguingly, a little like Cat Power imitating Ozzy Osbourne. In Kastle’s hands, though, the tune flashes back to 2-step’s glory days, complete with bouncy organ bass line and synths as bubbly as a freshly uncorked bottle of Dom. In contrast to 2-step’s habit of making chipmunks out of its singers, he plays Moss’ vocals relatively straight, save for a judicious bit of glottal chopping, but he strays from convention by briefly flipping the groove into a brittle triplet rhythm that’s halfway between trap and Schaffel. If you’ve ever dreamed of a Lex Luger/Superpitcher collaboration, here’s the next best thing. (via SPIN)
With over 700 submissions, the Dim Mak x Earmilk x TomorrowWorld DJ Open fueled one of the hottest competitive bonfires in electronic dance music history!
Hundreds of aspiring DJ’s from across the nation put their heart and soul into creating mixes that blew our minds. It would be an understatement to say that choosing a winner was not easy and we appreciate each and every person who submitted. However, after hours of listening to and researching each contestant, it soon became clear to us who the winner should be, based upon the rules and regulations we established from the beginning.
Not only did we pay special attention to the originality, creativity, and diversity of the mix, we also took into consideration the way in which the artist branded themselves to their fans and the hussle and drive they’ve put into making a name for themselves and their music thus far. In the end, we chose a well-rounded winner we believe to be not only extremely talented, but also excellent at strategically and creatively marketing themselves and their music to their audience while differentiating themselves from the competition.
And now, without further adieu, the artist we’ve chosen to open the Dim Mak Up All Night Stage at the first-ever TomorrowWorld 2013 is LA-based producer duo, 2 DEEP:

This past weekend marked the first, national Red Bull Flugtag event in Long Beach, CA. Over 110,000 people spectators showed up to watch as 28 teams launched their clever flying contraptions off the Rainbow Harbor pier in hopes of taking home the title of champion and possibly breaking a world record.
Being Dim Mak, we can never resist a challenge, so we teamed up with our good friends at We Are Matik to create the Interactive Boombox Flugtag. While we didn’t take first place or set a world record, we did get a 7.5 for creativity and kicked it with the Workaholics doods (see below). Next year we plan on returning to the annual Red Bull Flugtag with a vengeance like no other – DOMINATION #BYANYMEANSNECESSARY

Well, well, well- lookie here! It’s a new remix of early 90’s anthem, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” from Nirvana. The leader in the Seattle grunge scene, in fact their beloved In Utero album turned twenty years old last week. We get that this rock song has been redone for over twenty years, so we thought we should giveaway a remix that one-ups the competition for #FreeFriday. A first for Dim Mak, we have some stellar news to share with the hardstyle community, and the dedicated family of electronic dance music as a whole. We are excited to announce that our first ever hardstyle signee, Coone, has topped the Beatport Hard Dance chart! The Belgian native dropped “Our Fairytale (Theme of Tomorrow 2013)” just under a week ago as a Beatport exclusive, and it has already shot all the way to the top of its respective genre chart.
The second single from his upcoming full-length album Global Dedication, “Our Fairytale (Theme of Tomorrow 2013)” is the official track for Q-Dance video coverage at TomorrowWorld 2013. Featuring the vocals of Chris Madin, Coone himself is excited to spin the track and perform at this year’s inaugural TomorrowWorld event in Chattahoochee. Coone plays on Saturday, September 28th of the Georgia festival, as well as at The Sound of Q-Dance on October 5th, alongside hardstyle contemporaries Noisecontrollers, Wildstylez, Gunz for Hire and more.
As he prepares to hit the road once again this fall, Grammy-nominated international producer/DJ and electronic dance music entrepreneur STEVE AOKI has announced additional support acts for his upcoming Aokify America Tour. For the tour, AOKI has drafted an elite group of artists from the DIM MAK roster—the independent record label, events and lifestyle company, and apparel line he founded in 1996 and presenting partner of the tour—including Felix Cartal, Autoerotique, Dirtyphonics, Keys N Krates, Garmiani, Deorro, Rune RK, and Botnek as well as a new, specially designed production from performer Kryoman entitled HEX3D. Already featuring a stellar lineup with bass “Legend” Borgore and hip-hop heavyweight Waka Flocka Flame as direct support, with special guest Pharrell Williams (The Neptunes/N.E.R.D.) appearing on select dates, the Aokify America Tour stands as one of the highlights on this year’s touring circuit. Tickets for the Aokify America Tour are on sale now: aokifyamerica.com.
The newly confirmed rotating talent on the Aokify America Tour adds a diverse array of artists spanning a wide spectrum of electronic music styles. Coming off his most successful release to date with the Past, Present, Felix EP on Dim Mak Records—praised by ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT and BILLBOARD.COM, who called featured track “New Scene” “one of the best dance recordings of the year”—Felix Cartal brings his signature electro house sounds. Toronto-based electro producer Autoerotique adds a heavier sound to the mix, best exemplified on the latest track“Play It Again” and the recent Asphyxiation (Remixes) EP, both out now on Dim Mak Records. Featured on AOKI’s Deadmeat Tour in 2012, French electronic dance music quartet DIRTYPHONICS return with their trademark heavy bass heard on their debut full-length album Irreverence and the corresponding No Stopping Us (Remixes) EP, both available now on Dim Mak Records. Dubbed “EDM’s hottest live band” by BILLBOARD.COM and featured by USA Today, Toronto-based live electronic outfit Keys N Krates recently released their SOLOW EP on Dim Mak Records, which highlights their trap-tinged electronic/hip-hop hybrid sound. Also featured on the tour are producers Garmiani, Deorro, house/techno artist Rune RK, and production/DJ duo Botnek. Additionally, performer Kryoman introduces his innovative production setup HEX3D on the Aokify America Tour, which pushes the boundaries of live, audiovisual performance art.
The new talent is not the only major tour announcement being made though. A proponent of pro-social causes and a philanthropist in his own right, AOKI’s Steve Aoki Charitable Fund is donating a dollar for every ticket sold throughout the tour to a charity selected by his fans via Facebook. Furthermore, for every year AOKI has been alive, he will match a corresponding $1,000 for a total of $36,000 on the tour. Fans will be encouraged to vote for their chosen charity from a group of four pre-selected organizations, including: American Brain Foundation, committed to curing brain disease; University of Rochester – Memory Care Program, providing diagnosis, treatment, and care of neurodegenerative conditions that affect the elderly and the aging nervous system; Brain Preservation Foundation, evaluating “plastination” and “cryonics,” two ways doctors might inexpensively preserve the brain of a dying person; and Infusio, pushing the fusion of cutting-edge science and the newest developments in complementary medicine placed in a spa-like healing environment. Fans can vote via a dedicated poll on STEVE AOKI’s official Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Steve.Aoki) starting October 9 through November 23. Following the tour, AOKI will hand deliver the check to the chosen charity. For more information, visit: www.steveaokifund.com.

Sounds from the Bloody Beetroots, Carnage and Borgore, and Marin Solveig fly by, but the focus remains on “Drop It” and its interplay with a little bit of Daft Punk.
“Their sound is hard and heavy, just how we like it!” Aoki tells Rolling Stone. “This mix hits just as strongly as their live sets. When I listen to it, I feel like I’m right there with them.”

Tell us about Friends of Friends. How did you come up with the concept?
It was just a way of tying a bunch of things together. When I used to shop for records, I would always looks at 3 things. The art, the collabs and the label. Those three would basically tell you about someones aesthetic, who they’re friends with or who respects their music enough to work with them and their general vibe. I wanted that all to ring true immediately for FoF releases, so I ask every artist about who they might know that can help them make their release special. Would way rather that than some random a&r decisions like “get a hot vocalist” or whatever. We try and make it about building a community of friends that all make great art. And the releases come out great because of it.
What separates FoF from other labels/brands in the same market? Your website states that the name “Friends of Friends” is “the driving force behind the label and website, referring to the most effective way (yet traditional way!) people learn about new music: through Friends!” Tell us how this process works!
I kind of touched on it in the last answer but basically the people closest to you are the ones who want to see you succeed the most. So we try and incorporate all of FoF’s artists friends and our friends of friends in our planning of say, releases and remixes, all the way down to our website’s news and bookings for events etc. It’s about hopefully showing the world that FoF is a network of talented and passionate people that can all build careers by supporting one another’s art.
Young Adults is your side project with David Fisher. Tell us how this collab came about and the connection with your label.
Ah, D is just one of my oldest and best friends. We’ve DJed together for about 8 years now. We played house parties mostly for years… total bedroom DJs. For the longest time the US wasn’t really fucking with what we playing. A lot of German techno, old disco and house records etc. We just kept it low-key for a while. But a few years back we started really talking about starting a label and last year we finally made it a reality. YA is FoF’s “sister label.” We wanted to push vinyl, slow mixes, long songs and all that as a counter to the laptop DJ culture that’s been everywhere. We’ve put out 3 records now and have played started playing out a ton. This summer we got to take over the Ace Hotel Palm Springs for a weekend, opened for Omar S at A Club Called Rhonda and now headlining Dim Mak Tuesdays. Been a pretty awesome ride so far
We’ve heard Friends of Friends referred to as “a collective.” Who exactly comprises this collective and how does one become a part of it?
Honestly it’s pretty nebulous. I can name so manyyyy people who are extended fam but i guess it starts by the artist releases put out by the label. Salva, Shlohmo, Groundislava, Tomas Barfod, LOL Boys, Jerome LOL, Ernest Gonzales, Evenings and our newest signees Kyson and Perera Elsewhere all make up the crew now. But we’ve also had amazing more friends built through compilations, artist/project collabs, remixes and shows etc. People like Daedelus, Baths, Grenier, Low Limit, Robot Koch, Toy Selectah, the Wedidit and Anticon teams…I mean really this paragraph could go on forever. We’re very fortunate to have an extended network of rad talented people. On the video/visual side as well! I see you Great Nordic Swordfight, Video Marsh and Sus Boy
What are your plans/dreams/goals for 2013, both individually as an artist as well as for Friends of Friends? How would you like to expand FoF?
MY DREAM IS EVERYONE FALLS IN LOVE WITH KYSON & PERERA ELSEWHERE(our newest signings) LIKE I HAVE. Haha, but seriously my goal is to just stay on course. Definitely been building the infrastructure of FoF as a label. We signed a distribution deal in UK/EU with !K7 which I’m really excited about. We’ve been wanting to get our music out internationally way more so that’s definitely a great step. And really focus on continuing to develop good relationships and partnerships with other people doing rad things. Oh I guess also planning our anniversary stuff for ’14. Can’t believe it’s gonna be 5 years!!
TGIF? No! TGIFF! “Thank god it’s f*cking Friday” with this week’s #FreeFriday giveaway! Southern hip hop giant DJ Burn One puts his signature stamp on Will Brennan‘s “RNR” and slows it down from 100 miles an hour to booty grindin’ speed limit!.
