Interview Blende

Hi Blende, how are you?
Very well thank you! Getting ready to have some dinner shortly and just going through some promos – music and food, can’t complain!

At Dim Mak we’re still not sure, so please help me out.
Is it pronounced “Blend” or “Blend-e”? And where does the name come from?

To be honest it can be whatever you want it to be. I normally myself say Blend-ay (as in rhyming with grey, day, lay etc..), in Sweden I say Blend-uh (would rhyme with French “lait” or “parfait”) but if someone says blend – e or blend I won’t make a fuss about it.

It’s just a silly name that stuck and doesn’t really mean anything. I couldn’t use Blondie as it was taken so this was the next best thing.. In German though I’ve heard it means a poser who thinks he’s the shit but in reality is a loser. I always liked that meaning as it makes it not very serious, which is exactly what this name is not. The only thing I’m serious about is the way the music sounds

What’s this I hear about you wearing woman’s jeans and loving white wine?
Haha, where did you hear that..? Not to say it’s not true; I once got a pair of jeans from an excess stock box when in New York, meant for a woman but it fit me really well so I just kept it. That’s the only pair I have though so it’s debatable if I do wear women’s jeans. I’m not even sure if I still have them. The white wine thing is true, though. I drink more white wine than water, I think. I don’t really see the issue, although in the UK a lot of people seem to have an issue when you order white wine in a bar or pub. I guess if you’re not drinking lager you’re not a real lad according to the standard, but if that’s how it is I couldn’t care less if I wasn’t one.

What’s your favorite fish dish?
Haha, you’ve done your homework! Black cod is a favourite, japanese style

Do you or does your mum still have the stereo with the two tape decks?
Neither, although I do think it’s in storage somewhere in Stockholm.. Will have to get back to you on this one

Your site http://www.blende.co.uk doesn’t go anywhere…?
I know.. It used to, but the site was taken offline recently due to being updated, which has dragged on a bit now. Will have to get back to you on this one, too

I love Metro Area’s chilled disco vibe. Don’t you?
Who, in his or her (or as we say in Sweden – hen’s) right mind, wouldn’t?

New or old Disco? And why?
Old disco if we’re talking actual disco, but new disco if we’re talking electronic music with a disco twang.

Do you think you’ll go back to live in Stockholm some day?
Perhaps you could act as a tour guide and inspire all the American people to go to Stockholm?

Not a chance. Unless someone would pay me to. Which I guess is what a tour guide gets. So yeah, probably. I’ll take you to see the king, his wife, his mistress and her lover.

When is Synapse coming out? Any other upcoming releases or remixes we should know about? Will you be playing any new stuff at Dim Mak Tuesdays on Tuesday February the 19th?
It’s coming out in a couple of days ago, i.e. the 11th of February. So, it’s available to buy now or download from your nearest pirate bay, whichever you morally prefer. I’ve got a follow up to my last single on Eskimo Recordings in the making, which should hopefully be coming out in the next few months, as well as a bunch of remixes for various artists and labels – including one for you, you lucky dog(s?)!

Finish the sentence: I should come and see Blende at Dim Mak Tuesdays because…
my bucket list wouldn’t be complete without it!

Interlude Presents: TRUST & The Faint (Interview + Free Download)

December 19, 2012 Tim Gauthier Blog, News Tags: , , , , , ,

Photography by Krystal Mora

This December installment of Interlude features artists from a tour tandem, TRUST & The Faint. Interlude rounds up live photos from their November show at L.A.’s Henry Fonda Theatre and an interview with TRUST’s dreamy frontman, Robert Alfons.  We would like to hook it up with a Holiday gift, a free download of The FaintEvil Voices“.

Interlude Presents: Robert Alfons of TRUST

Lets start with a little game of word association. I say a word and you say whatever comes to mind:
⁃    Candy – Candy walls
⁃    Pockets – Overalls
⁃    Glass – Candy

I saw you took a traditional photo with Santa Claus, what did you ask for this Christmas ?
Actually, he didn’t even ask me… But if he did, I think I would want new mits. Every year I lose my mits and I want new, knitted gray ones.

Do you have any plans for NYE?
As of now, no. I usually just kind of hide, its quite overwhelming and ridiculous. Hopefully, it will just be a nice cozy, internal sort of evening. That’s what I would hope for.

Does the winter season have a particular effect on your creative process?
Being on tour, every day is a different season. There isn’t sort of any level of complaint, its just more of my mind and its chemistry doesn’t understand the pace of whats going on. One day its snowing and the next day its sunny and warm. Its definitely a ride.

Would you like to elaborate on the Revolution Recording Piano Version of “Sulk”, directed by Petra Collins?
A lot of my songs start in that form, from the piano. I really wanted to do a video playing them raw. Petra is a friend of mine and I think she is so talented.  It was pretty simple take,  just one camera and the two of us in that room. It was a great experience working with her.

I happened to be visiting my Nana when I watched the “Sulk” video and she absolutely loves you.

Oh I love her already! Aw that’s so sweet!  I want to meet her. I’m close with grandma, great aunt and my sisters. I miss them a lot when I go away. I can’t wait to see them when I get back.

What are you seeing when you are playing on-stage?
Usually everything is pretty black out there. There is no light on the audience, so its like a black void. I get lost and I think that’s good when you perform.

The album cover of TRST has always captivated me. What do you feel you captured in that picture you took at the club?
I think she’s really beautiful and I felt there was a story and a performance to it.  She was fabulous and amazing in every sort of way. She really struck me .

[image img=”http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ly3xxworZC1r9h2u3o1_500.jpg” alt=”title”/]

What kind of experimentation have you been developing for a more pop aesthetic in the next album ?
Its becoming a lot more upbeat, but I’m still a sucker for ballads. I think the shows have really changed how I am writing at the moment; having a higher energy and experimenting with sounds and rhythms. I’m getting better at drums and bass, and that’s the direction its going.

Will the lyricism have a similar vein of being erotic and ambiguous as the last album?

I don’t know. I guess Ill talk about that in 6 months. I’m still in the depths of it.

What were some highlights from your first visit to Los Angeles or Las Vegas?

The first time I visited LA was in April, for the first show we did and it was excellent. LA is just weird, dirty and scary at times. I would’ve have loved to spend more time there. Las Vegas…its so bizarre there. Its like a dream. The closest thing Ive seen to it was Niagra Falls because of it’s  similar sort of vibe of being neon all night. Las Vegas has a neon glare from the lights, but its an actual gluttonous and heathen reality that I don’t like. The rest of it is gritty to be in the aura of.

What music have you been listening while on tour?

Music appropriate for the road; lots of Burial, The Pet Shop Boys, The Radio Department, and Casket Girls.

What would you be doing if you weren’t making music right now?

Hiding away out in the country. I feel like I need to go on a weeks walk of nature. I know I’ll get that  some time, its just nice to be out on the road right now.

What’s something you want the world to know about you as an artist?

Its okay to DREAM.

Dim Mak Interviews Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo of The Bloody Beetroots

August 21, 2012 Tim Gauthier Blog, Lifestyle, Music Tags: , , , , ,

Words by Gina Michael, Photos by Control Alt Delight, Philip Mendoza 2012

These days, everyone from your best friend to your neighbor’s gardener’s barber is making music. In the overly-saturated electronic music world, there are a few heavyweights who stand alone—virtuoso music-makers who seem to have the Midas touch that turns anything and everything they work on to gut-wrenching gold.

The Bloody Beetroots a.k.a. Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo, undoubtedly has claimed a rightful place among the titans of electro music (even he would hate to be classified into just one genre)…
[hr/]

So there I sat, at the restaurant bar of the Standard Hotel in downtown LA, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the masked legend. To my surprise, and delight, Sir Bob was unmasked and without any airs. On stage he is larger than life, but in person, he exceeded his persona—simply because he is an incredibly down-to- earth person.
It felt as if I were catching up with an old friend—an old friend who happened to be interrupted multiple times during our conversation to exchange words with other industry wave makers, too many to mention, who accurately referred to Rifo as the most viral artist in electronic music. And so he is, and will continue to be, infecting us all with his conception of what it means to be an artist.

GM: Coming from performing all over Europe from France to Germany to Belgium, and then Puerto Rico last night, to being here in LA and tomorrow you’re off to Canada– your tour schedule is absolutely insane! It’s exhausting just thinking about it. What do you do to maintain while traveling and still manage to put on a high-energy, kick-ass show every time?
SBCR: You just don’t drink too much or do drugs and it’s not so bad. I’ve been doing this for a long time now, so the jet lag isn’t really jet lag, it’s just lag. But every night is a different experience. Each crowd has a different energy so my job is to connect with the crowd and their energy. If it’s there, I play to that. If it’s not, then it’s my job to give them the energy to want to stay and dance the whole set. I mean, in Europe there were some shows where it was raining, like really raining. And you know, they don’t want to be out but they are out there through it all but I just try to create a space so they will want to be there and have a great time anyway. Because of that, man we got some incredible shots of people going nuts in the rain and that makes it worth it for me, like I did my job.

GM: Can you tell us a little about your creative process? Do you get into the studio and stay there until you’ve made something, or do you only head to a studio after inspiration has struck?
SBCR: I try not to get stuck in the studio all the time, but yeah sometimes I do have to just go and work. But with a song, it’s all about the title. Once the title is there, there is a story waiting to be told. I don’t really know why it’s like it but that’s how it happens for me. The title comes to me and after that, it’s done. I know the beat, the chords, everything, it’s been composed.

GM: So if it starts with the title, is that how you make all of your music?
SBCR: Yes, every time. I mean I remember with Cornelius that was exactly what it was. The title came to me and I wanted to tell the story of Cornelius. He was a character that needed his story to be told.

GM: Well, it’s obviously working–your latest single “Rocksteady” is incredible. From the rock-infused electro beats to that insane video Wyatt Neumann dreamed up, “Rocksteady” seems to strike that perfect balance between garage punk rock and roll and the electro dance we’ve all grown to love. What is your personal definition of Rocksteady?
SBCR: With Rocksteady, once I had that title I knew it had to stay true to its rock ‘n’ roll roots. I wanted it to be reminiscent of the 60s and 70s and have the essence of that time but at the same time, I wanted to redefine what rock is.

GM: With the fairly recent explosion of EDM into mainstream media, it seems there is a massive influx of new music producers and DJs trying to get their material out and gain a strong following. Any advice you would give to someone out there trying to make a name for him or herself?
SBCR: Yeah, it’s true, electronic music is exploding, particularly in America – maybe too much. You know, there’s a lot of material out there now. Some people think that “electro,” if that’s what you want to call it, is cheesy. I know who I am and what I want to bring to the music world, so more than anything I want to make sure the music has content and has substance. For me, that is my main goal and that’s what I focus on regardless of what I’m working on. Of course I have to make a living and be able to stand on my own two feet, but I’m not making music so it can become something or get airplay on the radio. At the end of the day, it has to be about the music and making a connection. If you are doing it for any other reason it won’t work. Music is meant to be felt, nothing else.

GM: Is there anyone that you look up to or aspire to be like?
SBCR: It’s kind of stange, me personally I never really had any idols growing up. I think that’s why I can work with all different types of people. Some of them, are huge in their scenes, superstars, but I don’t think of it. I guess in my mind, I don’t like to weigh people. People are just people which I guess is why I can get along with anyone.

GM: Do you still keep in touch with Dennis? (Lyxzen of Refused and International Noise Conspiracy)
SBCR: Ah, I like to but now, he’s ridiculously busy, touring all over the world, way busier than me!

GM: You definitely aren’t afraid to branch out, encompassing everything from photography and fashion to politics and cinematography into your musical arsenal. What should we be on the lookout for next? A new album? Or maybe something completely different—a novel perhaps?
SBCR: I don’t think I’m so good with words and writing and talking, that’s why I do music and photography to be honest. But I do want to make a movie. That is my next goal. Not like some long full-length feature or anything like that. Just a short, f***ed up story that can maybe explain a little bit about me and how this all came to be.

And with that Sir Bob went off to HARD Summer in LA to put on one of the most insane sets I’ve ever seen—crazy enough to pull us from backstage and into the crowd so we could really get rowdy and experience what the Bloody Beetroots DJ Set is all about. With his latest single “Rocksteady,” a stacked tour schedule spanning from Europe across North America and down under to Australia, and a possible movie in the near future, it seems The Bloody Beetroots’ reign is far from over, but in actuality, is just getting started.

“This new EP has strong connections with the first album Mother Ignorance in which we have been exploring the road between electronica and metal.
What has evolved the most is the sound itself which has moved even stronger to the rave side.
The EP includes three new tracks and four amazing remixes including Steve Aoki and Atari Teenage Riot”.
