Last Tuesday was a big day for Cinespace. It was a VAPORS party with STEREO AND KANGOL COLLABORATION party first w/ Jason Lee and Chris Pastras hosting - Chris Pastras and homie from WESC. It was our 2 year anniversary and we had 4 UK bands & 1 Australian band performing and another UK act guest djing. The Presets (modular) from Australia, and the rest from UK - Battle, Forward Russia!, Black Bud, Carina Round all performed in the back with White Rose Movement performing in the dj room. Check out DIRTY PRESTON with the DIm Mak Sampler that we were giving out. We'll announce that when it's ready. Earlier that night, Vapors had their issue release party with the launch of KANGOL & STEREO's new hats hosted by Jason Lee & Chris Pastras. I had to run over to dj the MEAN MAGAZINE party that Bijou Phillips hosted for their issue release and then ran back to Cinespace to catch all the bands playing and finish up the night there. I stayed up so i wouldn't miss my flight to NYC the next morning. It's always best to get the earliest flight possible if you dj late. Red Bull vodkas can carry you through the few hours before you need to get to the airport. I just pray that i dont get a middle seat, although that's all i've been getting these past flights. It's like playing blackjack and getting 14s all the time. You just have to learn to accept the 14 and "learn" the 14. Be prepared for the 14. So that you don't turn into an asshole from being dealt the 14 over and over again.
Anyways, Marquee that night was the same as usual. Packed with the fashionistas that only come to Marquee (upstairs) on Paul's Wednesday nights, it's a really good party outside the drinks being the same prices that they charge all over the meat packing district. Me and Paul Sevigny. Photo by the one and only Chance Yeh. Red Asian Man and Jus Ske. Not sure when those two were both taken but i know it was marquee. Definitely a different crowd from the Happy Ending/LES scene but it's still good. Next night was the John Varvatos Exhibition for his new collection with Converse. The collection was fucking stunning. I witnessed his line the week before and it instantly reminded me of The Kills. i was always inspired by VV and Hotel's everything, including their style which consisted almost entirely of Hysteric Glamour's collection. The Varvatos presentation was not on a cat walk but the models were static, standing on bleachers with a light show that didn't really stand on its intentions too well. You couldn't see the collection too well but it only lasted for 8 minutes. Then New York Dolls went on and all this was happening in a high school gym in the middle of NYC. The set i djed was entirely rock something i haven't done in a long time. All in all a pretty good fashion show, although i as well as everyone else could have done without the karaoke live band.
Now onto MIAMI for WINTER MUSIC CONFERENCE. It is like SXSW but with djs and the most public flaunting of wealth imaginable. MOre than Vegas, more than Beverly Hills. It's sometimes hilarious, and for the most part disgusting especially when you see how large some of these breasts were and the cologne dudes were all out but with the largest muscles I've ever seen.
THis charade you see when walking through heavy crowds on the street down in South Beach. I meet up with Josh Madden and we, Josh, Alex Technique and myself stay at the CORDOZO HOTEL, one of Gloria Estefan's hotels. Later I djed the DKNY SWIM event before Sky Nellor jumped on.
Then met up wtih Jus Ske and went to MANSION to go see buddies Mark Ronson and AM rock out their sets.
AFter an hour waiting for a cab we eventually get to the REVOLVER party. I set up and passed out behind the decks. But before that happened I did catch JUSTICE DJ SET, UFFIE LIVE, HOT CHIP LIVE, THE PRESETS LIVE, JUAN MACLEAN LIVE sets were the best out of the 25 other djs and bands that played The party was at capacity til 9am and eventually ended at 10am.Jerry from Juan MacleanRaymond Roker, head honcho of URB Magazine rockin' out to some Justice. I also got my very own copy of the 5x12 PUMA Series that Weird Science did an exclusive remix of The Rakes' "Work Work WOrk" for. We'll be doing a special contest on the Dim mak site to give away one or two copies of the 5 x 12 Series soon. Keep an eye out.
The next night, met up with Jus Ske for his FRANK 151 event and eventually got to the VISIONAIRE MISSHAPES MIAMI party at the Shore Club. THere was also ten thousand djs that night as well- Misshapes, Lazaro Cassanova, SPencer Product, Lady Sovereign, Uffie, Denny De Nimh, Josh Madden, Junior Sanchez, Ultragrrrl, and myself. Uffie performance was off the hook and the party didn't end til 5am.Passed out in the Levi's room and woke up the next morning to find out that I'm djing the Misshapes party at ROK BAR with them, Junior Sanchez, Josh Madden and some others. before that party, Jus Ske, Chad Hugo and I went over to catch Uffie's set at Tommie Sunshine's B-Day party where MSTRKRFT, Princess Superstar, and Tommie djed. I decided to change my flight til Tuesday to catch 2 Live Crew, MSTRKRFT and Uffie perform Monday night for Arthur Baker's Party "Return to NYC". Sometime in the day Cobrasnake and I went to go visit Duv at the Standard. THen I went over to Miss Sixty to do an instore dj set there.
2 Live Crew, I never thought I would ever see them, so psyched in anticipation but it honestly was too flagrant for my taste plus Luke Skywalker wasn't there. Big Booty Bass however, I'm a huge fan of. And Le Tigre from L'Trimm was in full form dancing on stage with 2 Live Crew and taking snapshots of big booties. Uffie, me and Jesse MSTRKRFT Uffie, Cobrasnake, myself and a big group of people went to go catch her second performance at 2am at Snatch but shit was closed down and everyone was tired, really tired. Slept an hour and got on a plane back home.
Tuesday March 28th, Following WMC was our Tuesdays at Cinespace where Erik Hart from Morphine Generation's band Suicide Club performed with Jonah Bayer from Alternative Press's band Love Kill. That week's Cinespace marked the first Cinespace without Franki Chan/I Heart Comix. Franki is starting a new tuesday somewhere else and now the resident djs for Cinespace will be Jason Stewart who's the tall dude that has been doing door the past two years and myself. Wednesday March 29th April 6th that following Thursday was Scion's party to show a bunch of indie music videos from The Arm, Something for Rockets, MOnsters are Waiting, and some more...Party ensued afterwards... March 30th, Thursday was Golde's party at the Funky Buddah in Chicago. This was the first time i ever djed in CHicago and it was a fun party. THey love T.I. and some Young Geezy. Went back home to LA for Friday's HANGOVER party that we do there with Keith from MOSCOW, and cobrasnake and it was a packed affair on a rainy friday night. Keith, who also does Club Moscow and recently modeled for the Dim Mak Collection Eddie Donaldson and his lady Brandi Vail who did Loose Tooth with us and now helps us with this party. And a special live performance by Kennedy on top of the bass speakers and in the crowd Saturday, APril 8th i fly right back out to Denver, Colorado to dj for Rockstars Are Dead Check their myspace here. They throw the best indie parties in Denver and Peter Black was a great host. The Laylights played, Denver's answer to the Strokes and they have it every month. CHeck it out if you are in Denver. Las Vegas here i go. Two days - Monday and Tuesday April 10th and 11th. Monday's party was at the Monday residency at Mandalay Bay on the 52nd floor. April 6th that following Thursday was Scion's party to show a bunch of indie music videos from The Arm, Something for Rockets, MOnsters are Waiting, and some more...Party ensued afterwards... And they really all they really want to hear up in that spot was Young Geezy and T.I. all night if you could do it. Djed the party with resident Justin Hoffman who fucking tears it up. Parties in Vegas go til 4am. Went straight to bed on this one. I think i slept for at least 8 hours that night. The next night was at Ghost Bar in the Palms Casino. Carey Hart BMX rider showed off his fashion line while all the girls running up and down the catwalk were flicking everyone off trying to be punk rock in vegas. so wack. Good buddy Butch Walker played live and rocked his set. I djed with DJ 5IVE. Two of the best local djs in Vegas- Justin Hoffman and 5Ive. Cinespace in the meantime, APril 11th was sweet night with Blake Miller from Moving Units djing wth Jason Stewart and German's Robocop Kraus and Slow Signal Fade performed in the back. Plus giveaways from one of my all time favorite bands Liars. Sweet. Wednesday April 12th, After sober non gambling Vegas time, i flew out to dj for WESC for their opening of their NYC store with Stretch Armstrong at HOME Club Corey came to NYC and partied down. WESC STore opening with Jerry Hsu, Jason Lee, Chris Pastras, CobraSnake, & myself. Photographer for WeSC. Chris Pastras and Gregor from WeSC.
