Most Interesting Labels
"Cult of personality Steve Aoki (aka Kid Millionaire) and his label warrant mention for sheer quantity, if nothing else.. Though Dim Mak has been plodding around for a while, over the course of the last year or so, the label's productivity spiked so high, it's been difficult to keep track of all the releases. To recall just a few: The Gossip, Die Monitr Batss, Libretto, Bloc Party. We're impressed."

Steve Aoki on LA Music
"...LA reminds me of someone with ADD. Someone with ADD is someone that multitasks all the time- at least me. Like juggling 10 balls, 10 different fucking [things]- a chainsaw, a lemon, toilet paper and coffee. Going "Aah!" At the same time people are throwing other things in, so you're always doing all these different kinds of things. And the speed is so fast that it's hard to focus on just the chainsaw. Or, it's the idea of- you're running and you're running and you realize that you're naked, and you're running with everyone else who are fully clothed and already organized with all their fucking gear and their brand-new shoes. And you're like 'Holy shit, I don't have my fucking shoes. I'm trying to sprint with these people and I don't have my nice sneakers and my nice socks.' Everything's against you. Maybe that not LA, maybe that's just me. While you're running, people are throwing you sneakers to put on while you're running. So you don't have space to stop to organize and then go forward. It's more like you're constantly running and then you're given the stuff so you can keep up in the race. But you start off not knowing, [and] you don't really have space to stop. I don't know. Maybe it's the coffee..."

"'Dim Mak' means 'death touch' in Chinese, but everything that Steve Aoki of LA's Dim Mak record label touches, turns to gold. Just ask The Soledad Brothers- heirs to The White Stripes' Detroit garage throne- or red hot rock gods and godesses, The Von Bondies. Dim Mak began in Steve's apartment, while at Santa Barbara University. 'I saved up $400 from a summer job and chipped in with a few friends to pay for the first release,'- a 7-inch single by punk outfit, Six Figure Carousel. Over the next few years Steve secured material from on-the-up acts like Pretty Girls Make Graves and The Kills, both of whom he personally promoted and spent many months on the road with, doubling up as both label boss and tour manager. 'The Kills would do their sound check and I was outside in the van negotiating on the phone,' he recalls. With the label's rise in indie rock prestige, Steve has been able to branch out more. He DJs, writes for Yell magazine, and collaborates with other labels like Cold Crush and True Love. He is also writing songs with his sister, model/actress Devon Aoki for her upcoming pop record. With his fine ear for discovering new music, this is only the beginning. 'I read the 24 Hour Party People book about Factory Records and it was incredible,' he says, 'they were artists not businessmen. I can relate. There are some records that I will happily put out and even if they only sell 200 records, I don't care.'" back to top
