Aaron Albano, aka New York-based DJ/producer MING, has a storied career in music, beginning in an experimental hip hop group in the early ’90s and eventually moving into TV music licensing for shows like Weeds and Sex & The City. Now he’s ended up in electro-land, and it is certainly working out well for him–his next releases will be coming your way via powerhouse label Dim Mak and are also featured in this, our latest Heartbeat guest mix. From the stunning opening Clockwork remix of Black To White to the grinding moombahton closer remixed by the man himself, MING takes us on a wild ride of some of the lesser heard, yet equally impressive tracks in electro today.

Originally, I hadn’t planned on attending EDC – but a few days before the festival, my buddy Ryan gave me a proper pep-talk and convinced me to go, further telling me that “I wouldn’t be coming correct, If I didn’t attend”. It was decided, I was all-in for a bender of a weekend (which undoubtedly laid ahead). I reached out to my buddy Keith (Autoerotique), and sorted out credentials, so that I could bring my camera in without hassle. I’ve photographed numerous shows, gigs, festivals, etc…, but I’ve never been to / shot EDC. Naturally, I wanted to do something different with my photographs. A majority of the EDC photos that surface are typically edited in a similar manner, and shot from 1 or 2 perspectives: on stage (behind the dj) or from the crowd (facing the dj). In an effort to mix things up a bit, I decided to shoot the entire festival with my vintage 35mm film camera, while focusing on everything but the dj’s – more of a documentary approach.
Last year I was contacted online by some Anonymous activists regarding the Atari Teenage Riot song “Black Flags”. We collaborated on a viral video project that became a document of activism around the globe from the past six months. People sent in material from student protests in Chile, the Occupy movement, Anonymous and activists in Japan demonstrating against Tepco, the corporation responsible for the nuclear disaster in Fukushima.

Each of the tracks on the EKG EP mark a step in a different direction for Autoerotique, much like the stylistic departure heard on the Freak EP. Tracks include “EKG”, “Roll the Drums (feat. Marissa Jack)”, “WTF” and an exclusive edit from JFK of MSTRKRFT.
