Maybe the little meter that fluctuates between "guilty pleasure" and "anti-rockist subversion" is an antiquity in the post-Timberlake climate—or maybe folks are just ready for women to be our Beck Hansens. Even though it's pure 30th century sheen from Richard X, Royksopp and Timo Kaukolampi, Anniemal updates the detours from three decades of girl-pop. Pitchfork single of the year "My Heartbeat" is Royksopp mind-melding Donna Summermoaners and Aguilera groaners. UK hit Chewing Gum" is like Daft Punk producing some bastard child of Samantha Fox and Tom Tom Club. Underground banger "The Greatest Hit" samples Madonna's Everybody." Annie audaciously resurrects the sugary taste of Taylor Dayne, Pebbles, Suzi Q and the Mary Jane Girls without ever stopping to ask whether it was time. Sweet. - Christopher R. Weingarten
