LION FEVER REVIEW OF "HAUNTED WATER" IN DROWNEDINSOUND.COM
It's perhaps wrong to begin a review of Band A by mentioning Band B, but what the fuck: The Duke Spirit. I really like the London quintet, whose sometimes bombastic, sometimes serene music is complimented wonderfully by the sixty-a-day soul of frontwoman Liela Moss. Live, they can paint pictures with guitar strings and drum sticks; on record, they can both quicken the pulse and soothe the most wounded of hearts. But they're no Lion Fever.
This instance's Band A hail from Portland (no, not in Dorset) and number four; this, their debut, is both wonderfully dark and graphically dreamy, as menacing as it is mesmirising. Vocalist and co-producer Jennifer Pearl has a voice of such weight you could strap it to a length of rope and sink battleships with it; the band as a whole deal in minimalism taken to its most epic extreme, where the everyday can dabble in the otherworldly. What would you call it? Goth-blues? Swamp-soul? Something will probably stick in time, but right now 'superb' will suffice.
Picking standouts is a fruitless exercise - Haunted Water is at its most fulfilling when experienced as a 40-minute whole. Comparisons could be made with The Birthday Party, early PJ Harvey and the aforementioned Londoners, but again none make absolute sense - 'She Sleeps' administers dirty adrenaline and 'House Of Need' woozily romances; 'Lost Heat' is all balls and swagger while 'On Your Street' is an emotional plea dressed up as a death threat. All comparisons are off in favour of pure appreciation of quality over strict critical qualification - Band A, Lion Fever, are simply awesome.
A truly special release that'll literally haunt both waking hours and dreamland escapades until the next full moon.

I also heard their newest single "2 More Years" that blew my mind. They have tons more new material coming out and we'll be posting up as we get the word. As for now Bloc Party has a fan space called Marshals.
- Steve Aoki
Marshals - The Official Bloc Party Fan Space
Bloc Party have now launched MARSHALS, the official Bloc Party fan space. Marshals has been set up directly with the band with the hope of maintaining the personal touch that remains at the heart of everything Bloc Party do. Marshals, with the help of fans from around the world, will offer a bridge between Bloc Party and their rapidly growing audience. It is Bloc Party's sincerest hope that Marshals will be the beginning of a community in which everyone can express themselves.
Head on over there now!
Marshals
Members of MARSHALS will be able to access ever expanding exclusive content including music downloads, backstage footage, interviews, web casts, sneak previews of new releases, exclusive merchandise, web chats and competitions.
Members will also have access to US & UK ticket pre-sales, opening with an exclusive US tour pre-sale on July 16th, 2005. We will be offering a limited number of tickets for all dates of the US tour, one week ahead of public availability. This will be done via our own agent and is guaranteed to be cheaper than Ticketmaster!!! This service is only available from the MARSHALS website. Through the site you'll also have the opportunity to buy tickets for a members-only event that is set to occur once a year (which will include a full performance by the band!) We'll be announcing details of this exciting event very soon.
Bloc Party want to offer the site as a space for fans to interact with the band members themselves, as well as with other fans. We want to encourage members to share and contribute to the site in any way they can. We are asking fans send in audio, video, photos, stories, gig reviews, or suggestions for the site. The site is for fans and by fans.
MARSHALS will cost only $4.00 (other currencies will vary depending on daily exchange rate) for a year's subscription to cover the running costs. If any profits are made they will be directed back into the site and used to improve the service.
Someone sent this to us so we decided to put it up- More love to Pony Up!:

WIERD: Ben Lee Did What?!
That's right folks. Ben Lee performed on Conan O' Brien tonight.
But, this performance was different from the typical late night musical performance. Ben Lee performed the pop single "Catch My Disease" (from his new album 'Awake is the New Sleep') with a band (that's to be expected) and eight backup singers (slightly unusual). Amongst the backup singers, clapping and singing, were none other than DJ Kid Millionaire/Dim Mak Prez Steve Aoki (very unusual!) and Prince of Pop Har Mar Superstar (who, surprisingly, was fully clothed). And, towards the end, Lee improvised his song, plugging bands on his home label, Dim Mak Records and Har Mar's home label, Record Collection, by adding different bands into the lyrics:
"They play Pony Up! (Dim Mak) on the radio, and that's the way I like it. They play Har Mar Superstar (Record Collection) on the radio, and that's the way I like it."
Here is the Pony Up! Bio (courtesy of Dim Mak Records):
"The latest upholders of feminine prestige in the race for hit parade honors are a commanding fivesome calling themselves Pony up!. Formed New Year' eve 2002, they spent a year together honing their skills and shaping their sound, before unleashing it on the world, debuting at a pizza parlor in Burlington, Vermont. They spent the next year wowing crowds in one-horse towns and sprawling metropolises alike, loading their gear into various clubs, art galleries, and abandonned movie theatres. Armed with a veritable arsenal of pop hits, Pony up! entered the Hotel 2 Tango studios in the fall of 2003. They cut eleven strange and wonderful tracks, seven of which are slated for an ep release in october of 2004 on Dim Mak records. Comprised of sisters, roommates, coworkers and lifelong friends, Pony up! is a genuine labor of love for all involved. With Lisa J. Smith on bass, Lindsay Wills on durms, Laura Wills on keyboards, Sarah Moundroukas on guitar, and Camilla Wynne Ingr on everything else, they rotate lead vocals and deliver inspired harmonies to a rapt audience at every show. Indeed, Montreal's phenomenal pop combo always bring down the house."
If you're interested, you can purchase the new self titled EP from Pony Up! from the Dim Mak Store. NOTE: I must admit, I've not very familiar with Pony Up!, so I can't comment on their music. With that being said, here's the link:

Nylon to throw Van Sant film amidst boldfaced youth
NEW YORK: TUESDAY, July 19, 2005
write up in fashionweekdaily.com
Shine Your Slouch-Boots & Rip Yer Fishnets
Everybody loves a good party, especially one with a cute DJ and a guitar-shredding host who's also modeled for Giorgio Armani. Enter Nylon's next big bash: Tuesday at Pianos, with Michael Pitt slated to host.
Officially, the event serves as an after-party for Last Days, Gus Van Sant's latest film, which was inspired by the life (and death) of Kurt Cobain. The HBO Films/Picturehouse-produced film premieres at The Sunshine Theatre, and it's described by industry insiders as close in style to Van Sant’s previous Cannes hit, Elephant.
Unofficially, the party promises to be packed with too-cool boldfacers, including the always-photogenic Nylon staffers plus Gina Gershon, John Cameron Mitchell, and young Oscar-nominee Catalina Sandino Moreno, whom some New York paparazzi routinely mistake for Margherita Missoni.
Nylon has a long history with Mr. Pitt, who made a name with memorable streaks in darker movies like Hedwig and the Angry Inch and The Dreamers. One of the first magazines to give the young actor national coverage, Nylon also chose the Brooklyn blond as its first-ever cover boy for Nylon Guys.
Completing the fashiony circle is DJ Steve Aoki, whose sister Devon has shared a catwalk with Naomi Campbell, another expected guest. In true hauterfly form, the party has an invite-only policy and a door tighter than a pair of Guess Jeans—appropriate, since they're the sponsor.

DJs ARE EXPERT MIND READERS
When requesting a song from the DJ, just say "play my song", or "it goes something like this" then hum a few bars! We have a chip implanted in our heads with an unlimited database with the favorite tunes of every patron who ever walked into a bar & all songs ever recorded, so feel free to be vague, we love the challenge.
If we do not remember exactly what tune you want, we're only kidding.
DJs know every song ever recorded, so keep humming. Hum harder if need be ... it helps jog the memory.
If a DJ tells you they do not know a song you want to hear, they either forgot that they know the tune or they are just putting you on. Try singing a few words for the DJ. Any words.
It also helps to scream your request from across the room several times per set followed by the phrases, "AW COME ON!" and, "YOU SUCK!" Exaggerated hand gestures expressing disapproval from the dance floor are a big help as well, such as the thumbs down or your middle finger. Put-downs are the best way to jog a DJ’s memory. This instantly promotes you to the status of "Personal Friend Of The DJ."
DJs are notorious fakers & jokesters and never really prepare for their shows. They simply walk on stage with no prior thought to what they will do once they arrive. A DJ's job is so easy, even a monkey could do it, so don't let them off the hook easily.Your request is all that matters.
If a trance DJ had played at the club a few weeks ago, the next DJ that follows will automatically know every trance tune the previous DJ ever played, even if the current DJ is a house or jungle DJ. It's the law.
Feel free to yell Tupac or Biggie!! to a DJ that plays strictly house for example.
IMPORTANT
When an DJ leans over to hear you better, grab his or her head in both hands and yell directly into their ear, while holding their head securely so they cannot pull away. This will be taken as an invitation to a friendly & playful game of tug of war between their head and your hands. Don't give up! Hang on until the DJ submits.
DJs are protected by their equipment, & only play the game when tricked into coming out from behind their turntables. Though difficult to get them to play, it's not impossible, so keep trying. They're especially vulnerable during mixing songs.
TALKING WITH THE DJ
The best time to discuss anything with the DJ in any meaningful way is when he is in the mix. Our hearing is so advanced that we can pick out your tiny voice from the megawatt wall of sound blasting all around us. DJs are expert lip readers too. If a DJ does not reply to your question or comment during a tune, it's because they didn't get a good look at your mouth in order to read your lips.
Simply continue to scream your request & be sure to over emphasize the words with your lips. This helps immensely.Don't be fooled.
DJs have the innate ability to answer questions & mix at the same time. If the DJ doesn't answer your questions immediately, regardless of how stupid the question may seem, it's because they are purposely ignoring you.
If this happens, immediately cop an attitude. We love this.
HELPING THE DJ
If you inform the DJ that you are a DJ, the DJ will appreciate your help with the next few tunes, or however long you can remain standing on stage. Simply feel free to walk up on stage & join in. By the way, the drunker you are, the better you sound.
Keep in mind that nothing assists the DJ more than outrageous dancing, or a tambourine played out of tempo. Try the congas, they love the challenge. The DJ always needs the help & will take this as a compliment.
BONUS TIP
As a last resort, wait until the DJ takes a break and then get on stage and start playing their records. They love this. Even if you are ejected from the club, you can rest assured in the fact that you have successfully completed your audition. The club owner will call you Immediately the following day to offer you a position.
See you at the next gig ...
