Brooklyn's Panthers come at you with this most anticipated second release that feels more like a full album than the 5 song EP that it is. You can still hear the angular guitars and the explosive songwriting that was the foundation of last years "Are You Down?" LP on Troubleman, but this time with refined tone and deliberation. This record is grittier, more abrasive, while still being melodic, and really fucking loud. Jayson's vocals are still up front, this time with a bit more melody, and, as always, should be taken with doses of academia and theory from the likes of Georges Bataille to Brooklyn's own Notorious B.I.G. There's still an empowered language running throughout this record but it is less of Newton & Seale's rhetorical approach as in their previous and more of a Vaneigem personal/political angle. Panthers still draw their theories from personal power plays, and discuss identity politics and privilege through language, rhetoric and presence. Produced, engineered, and mixed by Steve Revitte, who is responsible for producing the last Liars album, Beastie Boys sessions, and sound for LCD Soundsystem and the Rapture. Revitte spent weeks with them collaborating in the mountains of New England, to practice spaces all over NYC. This time allowed for Panthers to develop a layered, nuanced album, experimenting with different kinds of instrumentation (horns, vibes, etc.). "Let's Get Serious" a musical and political progression from "Are You Down?ä It is timeless and should be one of the more influential rock records of the year.
