On Thursday, January 30th, we launched NIGHT BASS at Sound Nightclub – a new event series curated by the king of bass house AC Slater and his Brooklyn-based record label Party Like Us.
Los Angeles was served up a deep dish of house, club, uk garage, bassline, and 2-step from AC Slater, Christian Martin, Astronomar, Petey Clicks, and Sleazemore. As you can see from the photos, the people couldn’t get enough!

Tomorrow evening, January 14th, we are pleased to once again have our good friends at the legendary Ed Banger Records in the house for Feadz’s album release party where he’ll be promoting his latest LP Instant Alpha. Joining Feadz on the decks will be Sydney-based tech house producer Light Year, up and coming production duo Phantoms whose self-titled EP is out now on OWSLA’s Nest, LA-based producer Mike B, and our trusty resident Bones! This isn’t the first time Feadz has brought the beats to our beloved #DimMakTuesdays – last March, he tore up the decks with Oliver Twizt and gave LA a rare taste of what he and the Ed Banger crew have been cooking up over in Paris. Recently, we had the opportunity to chat directly with Feadz before the big event tomorrow and, needless to say, this producer is one game-changing BADASS.

1. What can people expect from your set this week at #DimMakTuesdays?
I hope the unexpected.
2. This isn’t your first time playing #DimMakTuesdays – in fact, you played here last March with Oliver Twizt! What do you think about #DimMakTuesdays?
I had a warm welcome and reaction and I love the fact that it is on a Tuesday. For me it represents people’s concern about music and not a random crowd who is going out on the weekend.
3. You’ve been referred to as “a child of hip hop,” can you tell us some of the artists who’ve influenced your music from the beginning? How do you feel your sound has evolved throughout the years from hip hop style turntablism to more techno-sounding productions?
Public Enemy has been the major influence in my life – so much room for scratching and so much great music, pitched down or up or manipulated in extreme ways for a result that is unexpected and not regular in a classic music eye. I think hip hop is becoming more & more techno over the years – it’s more minimal, it’s more synthetic, and I think my sound has followed the same path unconsciously.
4. You were in a scratch band in the early 90’s, what was that like?
It was a lot of guys, of lot of smoke, a lot of sweat, and a lot of technical practice. It was great for a while.
5. You’ve been with the legendary Ed Banger Records since 2005, how did that partnership first come about?
Paris is small and Pedro Winter has always been an influential DJ, so from my first records, I was giving them to him and he was liking my sound. As soon as he created the label, he offered to release my music.
6. It’s been awhile since you’ve been in LA, what are you most looking forward to while being out here? What’s your take on the LA music scene?
Of course i’m looking for better weather than here, and I’m very glad to show LA the music that I consider to be the best . I feel very far from the scene, being at the Hard Festival last year in LA I couldn’t believe the amount of horrible music I heard. For a country who invented techno music, I can’t believe the direction it went in and the music that is popular out there. I’m sorry to say that but I think Americans have terrible taste when it comes to electronic music. But on the other hand, it’s never been that popular so it’s still good and I got faith on many U.S. producers who are gonna level it up.
7. You’ve done remixes for Boys Noize, Cashmere Cat, Surkin, & Mr. Oizo to name a few. What have been some of your favorite collaborations so far?
All those mentioned here are collabs that have made me very happy . I couldn’t really choose a favorite amongst them.
8. What’s your take on the evolution of djing and what do you see as the future of edm?
DJing is turning more and more has a producer representation. It’s a little sad that the original job of the DJ – finding great music for you to discover and dance to – is thought less of than your average entertainer (who is gonna play easy and raise his hands on every track to put you in the mood). And as I was saying, I think the music can only get better as I think it’s pretty horrible right now – just my opinion though, I’m known to be pretty critical but it’s just because it’s important to me.

What can I say about Los Angeles? Warm weather, palm trees, and most importantly- good house. My name is Cubby Cramer; I am one of the interns at Dim Mak Records this fall. I hail from the cold and wintery land of Ithaca, a small hipster city in New York. As a senior Television-Radio student at Ithaca College, I am given the opportunity to study abroad in California. Dim Mak heard about my experience with dance music, from editing Your EDM to hosting my own dance radio show on WICB, so I was one of the lucky few brought on board. This past week was a moment many of us at Dim Mak were looking forward to, Steve Aoki at The Shrine. As his Los Angeles stop on the Aokify America tour, I was excited to see the other artists on the roster for the evening equally as much as Steve Aoki himself. Besides- it was snowing in Ithaca- I really couldn’t complain!
My evening started with Keys N Krates, who I was immediately was impressed with. Call me biased seeing as they are a Dim Mak faithful, but it was their live setup was the real kicker. The three man group is going to be one of the real game changers moving forward, merging djing, keyboards, and drums into one live act. Seeing as everyone is a DJ these days, a trap artist that has an atypical approach like this will easily put them in front of the pack. Case in point, their live rendition of “Dum Dee Dum” was excellent, with a long bridged section leading into the track we know and love.
This was an evening of firsts. While all the artists that night I had not previously seen, it was also the first time I had seen a rapper live. Waka Flocka came on stage to much rejoicing from the crowd, while DJ Ace dropped many Brick Squad Monopoly and gunshot sound effects. Both the crowd and myself enjoyed Waka’s hits like “Hard In Da Paint” and “Grove St. Party”, it was the Beatport Top 10 reaching “Wild Out” that set it off. Hearing this big electro house record live and seeing a sea of fans jumping in unison was a sight to behold.
Alvin Risk and Iggy Azalea were both fun in their own rights. Alvin Risk brought high energy electro and dubstep from his end, while Iggy Azalea dazzled with her dance moves and backup dancers. Alvin was sure to play his high profile works like his remix of “We Are Young” and his addictingly fun remix of “Earthquakey People” from Steve Aoki. Iggy Azalea had a crazy, reflective silver jumpsuit on this evening, stealing the show with her look. I could tell that the ladies in the audience really enjoyed her set, and personally I was happy to hear “Beat Down” live for a change.
Finally, Steve Aoki took the stage, the moment everyone had been waiting for. As a dance music journalist who closely watches the public opinion, I’ve been looking forward to seeing Steve perform for a long time. Steve Aoki often gets knocked by dance music purists for believing he does prerecorded sets- but truth be told- nothing is feigned in his live performance. When it came time to cake the crowd, to much audience jubilee mind you, Steve knew just how much time he’d have before jumping back on the decks to throw on another record. Steve was sure to drop both his upcoming releases like soon-to-be major electro hit “Aoki Jump” with R3hab while bringing back old favorites like “Warp 1.9” and “No Beef”.
I must also applaud Steve for inviting Travis Barker for live drumming tracks like “Push ‘Em” and a number of others. Then to go one step further, Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park joined on stage to perform “A Light Than Never Comes”. I had never expected so many guests to join Steve on stage, it really puts into perspective how many other artists he works with. Then to close the evening, Steve engaged the crowd in breaking the Guinness World Record for longest crowd scream. What else to say about this evening but wow, Steve and Dim Mak are clearly writing the manual to event success! I’ve seen my fair share of different DJs and musicians, but the energy of this evening was unreal. From start to finish, this night will go down as a testament on how to throw a proper house party.

This past weekend marked the first, national Red Bull Flugtag event in Long Beach, CA. Over 110,000 people spectators showed up to watch as 28 teams launched their clever flying contraptions off the Rainbow Harbor pier in hopes of taking home the title of champion and possibly breaking a world record.
Being Dim Mak, we can never resist a challenge, so we teamed up with our good friends at We Are Matik to create the Interactive Boombox Flugtag. While we didn’t take first place or set a world record, we did get a 7.5 for creativity and kicked it with the Workaholics doods (see below). Next year we plan on returning to the annual Red Bull Flugtag with a vengeance like no other – DOMINATION #BYANYMEANSNECESSARY
