Battle of the Beats: Dirtyphonics vs Clockwork – Last Chance (Remixes)

battle-of-the-beats-no-week

Battle of the Beats is a feature from Dancing Astronaut that pits two remixes against one another to determine which production made better use of the original. With remix packages growing in length and increasing in frequency, the number of reworked tracks has skyrocketed. After wading through the archives, we are opening it up to our readers to weigh in on whose rendition takes the proverbial cake.

Kaskade & Project 46 – Last Chance (Dirtyphonics remix)

France’s Dirtyphonics make good on their name with their remix of Kaskade and Project 46′s uplifting Atmosphere collab. Ratcheting the tune from 128 to 140 bpm, the quartet beef up the bassline while modifying the melody into something a tad more face-melting. Supporting the vocals but snipping away a few refrains, the remix instead highlights a rebuilt dub framework complete with deep dips and a heavy dose of reverb. Only the second Ultra outing for the Dim Mak regulars, the Dirtyphonics remix of “Last Chance” demonstrates their versatility.

Kaskade & Project 46 – Last Chance (Clockwork remix)

Debuted at EDC Las Vegas, Clockwork‘s remix of the collab wastes no time getting to the punchline. An electro take on the euphoric tune, the track utilizes the pounding tribal-esque percussion popularized at festival grounds around the world this summer. Structured as a back and forth between vocal and vertigo-inducing builds, the tune also engages in a bit of piano chord play that allows the original’s plucky bridge to peek through. Spanning several genres while consistently hitting the crowd-appeal note, Clockwork’s rework has celebrated its success with a spot on the Beatport Top 100.

Dim Mak Records has taken over the Beatport Hard Dance Chart with three of our newest releases in the Top 10. Dirtyphonics’ October release of “Hanging on Me” (Borgore & Ookay Remix) is reigning at #1 followed by Dim Mak’s first hardstyle producer Coone. Both of Coone’s latest singles “Our Fairytale (Theme Of Tomorrow 2013)” feat. Chris Madin and “Zombie Killer” feat. Kritikal are placed side by side at #6 and #7, respectively. [info_box_3 title=”ABOUT THE RELEASE”]

Now firmly cemented as one of the staple tracks in the Dirtyphonics discography, “Hanging On Me” made headlines earlier in 2013 for its huge dubstep sound. Now a number of versatile artists have lent their hands to remix this dancefloor devastator into wholly different creations.

Borgore and Ookay teamed up for their remix of “Hanging On Me”, bringing together two different genres into one tight package. The first drop in this track leans on devastating hardstyle sounds with its snapping kicks. The second drop however will surely leave crowds surprised, as it breaks into a full trap workout. The Kastle remix goes into a polar opposite direction. Pulling off the fresh new remixed sound seamlessly, the Kastle remix is proper 2-step garage. This track fits perfectly into club sets, with its warm lead sounds and triplet sections, all whilst keeping Liela Moss’s vocals intact. Finally, the Slogun & iOh remix turns “Hanging On Me” into the drum & bass we know and love. A sizable reworking of the original track’s synths turns this remix into a break-beaten killer track for the D&B massive.

It seems like producing a super legit remix of a DIRTYPHONICS track is like a right of passage only bestowed upon the most gifted of music makers, as witnessed by Kastle’s remix Dirtyphonics“Hanging On Me”; laid back and fresh, “Hanging on Me (Kastle Remix)” is like a breath of clean air on this #dirty track. Kastle, who is known for infusing the sounds of R&B with edgier dubstep influences, sheds a whole new light with his chilled out rendition.

When it comes to heavy bass, haunting lyrics belted out with soaring vocals, dirty beats, and overall badassery…who do you turn to? If you didn’t answer DIRTYPHONICS, then you are wrong and need to reevaluate your life/music situation. The only way to make a DIRTYPHONICS song even dirtier is to add the talents of the cake lovin’ Borgore and trap producer extraordinaire Ookay; the results of such a collaboration can be heard in the Hardstyle-inspired remix these two heavy hitters produced on the Dirtyphonics track “Hanging On Me”. Full of subtle drops and vibey bass, “Hanging on Me (Borgore & Ookay remix)” is sexy and fun, which is just what we’d expect from a fusion of all this talent in one place.

[SPIN Premiere] KASTLE Wrings a Bubbly 2-Step Remix out of Dirtyphonics’ Brutal ‘Hanging on Me’

820 546 Tim Gauthier

130926-dirtyphonics-kastle (1)

Is there any sound so tough that a U.K. garage refix can’t turn into something pliable and seductive? Apparently, not, at least judging from the Los Angeles producer Kastle’s remix of “Hanging on Me,” a new song from the French quartet Dirtyphonics. Their recent singles have typically trod the line between headbanging and Ed Banging: “No Stopping Us,” featuring Foreign Beggars, was hip-house via Alice in Chains, while “Walk in the Fire” was forged of blast beats and chugging metal guitars. “Hanging on Me” is similar, marrying Master of Puppets-inspired twinned leads to a shuddering, dubsteppy cadence and topping it off with vocals from the Duke Spirit’s Liela Moss, who here sounds, improbably but intriguingly, a little like Cat Power imitating Ozzy Osbourne. In Kastle’s hands, though, the tune flashes back to 2-step’s glory days, complete with bouncy organ bass line and synths as bubbly as a freshly uncorked bottle of Dom. In contrast to 2-step’s habit of making chipmunks out of its singers, he plays Moss’ vocals relatively straight, save for a judicious bit of glottal chopping, but he strays from convention by briefly flipping the groove into a brittle triplet rhythm that’s halfway between trap and Schaffel. If you’ve ever dreamed of a Lex Luger/Superpitcher collaboration, here’s the next best thing. (via SPIN)
