South Central are the certified badboys of the Bass Music scene. Having toured with The Prodigy and Pendulum, remixed DJ Fresh, Nero and Drumsound & Bassline Smith, and had their music hammered by Knife Party, Kill The Noise and Mistajam, they are rightfully held as one of the most unruly and uncompromising production outfits on the planet. Their last EP had dance floors shaking across the globe with an infectious combination of electro, rock and dubstep – a sound the duo have dubbed Rocktronica.
The ‘Hollywood’ EP promises to be even bigger, bolder and brasher. Overflowing with bass-fuelled energy and a “fuck it” attitude, it’s the perfect combination for release on Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Recordings. The titles indicate exactly where the listener is heading, with the brutal universe slaying riffs present on ‘Star Wars’ indicative of the cinematic approach to the production.
An apocalyptic intro utilises the voice of Jeff Fairchild, renowned for his work on movie trailer voiceovers, before unleashing a monstrous drop. It’s then interspersed with a flurry of panoramic snippets of film score aping moments – think what would happen if Justice, Rusko and Pendulum suddenly wrestled sound-tracking duties to the latest blockbuster from John Williams.
‘Jaw Drop’ sees the duo facing off against the vocals of lead singer of The Blackout, Sean Smith, pitting the punk’s shrieks against a relentless and warped jackhammer synth. Things continue in the savage vein on ‘Armageddon’, which although again an exercise in ear drum shattering sonics manages to somehow retain a funky allure throughout.
‘Bass Monster’ pares the vibe back slightly from the off but the pause is temporary, the slower build swiftly incorporating a siren before exploding into action. This is powerful bass music designed to leave nightclubs, festival tents and warehouses reeling from South Central’s killer blows.
The duo’s words sum up the approach for the EP perfectly: “We wanted to write a batch of trax that when you hear ’em in a festival or in a club it reminds you of the thrill you get when you see epic movies, like with the intro for star wars. We want to recreate that in our DJ sets as well; this full on experience of sound.”
This relentless mandate sees them take an eighteen date tour across the globe this autumn, celebrating the EP across nine different countries. There are also two dates slotted in supporting chart topping sensation DJ Fresh on his live tour, further augmenting South Central’s reputation as rave troubadours of the highest calibre.
The dates will showcase their ability to weld stadium slaying sonics to their uncompromising musical stance, an aesthetic grounded in the realities of today’s thirsty bass hedonists looking for the next aural rush. The Hollywood EP is evidence that, right now, few are better placed to deliver it than South Central.
