[THUMP VIDEO] Real talk with over 20 of Toronto’s dance music gurus.

1440 900 Tim Gauthier

In mere days from now—November 4 through 9, to be exact—a selection of finalists from around the world will touch down in Toronto for the Red Bull Thre3style World Finals, the globe’s best DJ competition actually geared towards the dancefloor. But it’s not like the Canadian capital needs any talent imported. Many of the DJs/producers currently blowing up the club scene worldwide originate in the T… and you may not even know it.

In this video, Brooklyn-based DJ Jubilee—a Thre3style judge who has played in Canada so many times she’s practically half-maple—visits over 15 of her Toronto-based friends, including Dim Mak superstars Keys N Kratesand Autoerotique, bass dudes Hunter Siegel and Marcus Visionary, techno leading lights Gingy and Alixander III (of Azari & III), and frequent Thre3style performers GrandtheftThugli, and Skratch Bastid, among many others. Along the way we discover that the Toronto dance music scene is a fractured but lovable family—most of these producers have worked together, lived together, thrown parties together, or gotten in fights with each other at one point or another, whether they’re deep in the techno game or banging out the hardest trap sounds.

Watch See You in Toronto to find about Torro Torro’s secret love affair with pigs, why Bruce Trail is a wizard, who throws the best afterparties, how Autoerotique gets erotic, and why Hamilton is the darkest place on the planet Earth, among other secrets of the city’s dance music elite.

Keys N Krates – Dum Dee Dum (Official Video)

1438 808 Tim Gauthier

Toronto-based live electronic outfit KEYS N KRATES have today (October 17) partnered with MTV Clubland and mtvU for the premiere of the official music video for their breakthrough single “Dum Dee Dum” from their recently released SOLOW EP, out now on Dim Mak Records. The video made its on-air debut this morning on MTV Clubland and is also featured on MTV2 and mtvU. Watch the “Dum Dee Dum” music video here: http://goo.gl/xNJbVM.

Directed by Slave Labour, the video is a hilarious mockumentary that explores the Mennonite culture. In the video, the director visits various Mennonite communities and introduces members to current technology unbeknownst to them, including iPods, boom boxes, and more, all the while blaring the “Dum Dee Dum” track in full blast. The reaction from the Mennonite community to the alien sounds of “Dum Dee Dum” is priceless.

500 500 Tim Gauthier

As he prepares to hit the road once again this fall, Grammy-nominated international producer/DJ and electronic dance music entrepreneur STEVE AOKI has announced additional support acts for his upcoming Aokify America Tour. For the tour, AOKI has drafted an elite group of artists from the DIM MAK roster—the independent record label, events and lifestyle company, and apparel line he founded in 1996 and presenting partner of the tour—including Felix Cartal, Autoerotique, Dirtyphonics, Keys N Krates, Garmiani, Deorro, Rune RK, and Botnek as well as a new, specially designed production from performer Kryoman entitled HEX3D. Coming off his most successful release to date with the Past, Present, Felix EP on Dim Mak Records—praised by ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT and BILLBOARD.COM, who called featured track New Scene” “one of the best dance recordings of the year”—Felix Cartal brings his signature electro house sounds. Toronto-based electro producer Autoerotique adds a heavier sound to the mix, best exemplified on the latest track“Play It Again” and the recent Asphyxiation (Remixes) EP, both out now on Dim Mak Records. Featured on AOKI’s Deadmeat Tour in 2012, French electronic dance music quartet DIRTYPHONICS return with their trademark heavy bass heard on their debut full-length album Irreverence and the corresponding No Stopping Us (Remixes) EP, both available now on Dim Mak Records. Also featured on the tour are producers GarmianiDeorro, house/techno artist Rune RK, and production/DJ duo Botnek. Additionally, performer Kryoman introduces his innovative production setup HEX3D on the Aokify America Tour, which pushes the boundaries of live, audiovisual performance art.

The new talent is not the only major tour announcement being made though. A proponent of pro-social causes and a philanthropist in his own right, AOKI’s Steve Aoki Charitable Fund is donating a dollar for every ticket sold throughout the tour to a charity selected by his fans via Facebook. Furthermore, for every year AOKI has been alive, he will match a corresponding $1,000 for a total of $36,000 on the tour. Fans will be encouraged to vote for their chosen charity from a group of four pre-selected organizations, including: American Brain Foundation, committed to curing brain disease; University of Rochester – Memory Care Program, providing diagnosis, treatment, and care of neurodegenerative conditions that affect the elderly and the aging nervous system; Brain Preservation Foundation, evaluating “plastination” and “cryonics,” two ways doctors might inexpensively preserve the brain of a dying person; and Infusio, pushing the fusion of cutting-edge science and the newest developments in complementary medicine placed in a spa-like healing environment. Fans can vote via a dedicated poll on STEVE AOKI’s official Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Steve.Aoki) starting October 9 through November 23. Following the tour, AOKI will hand deliver the check to the chosen charity. [Billboard Premiere] Keys N Krates, ‘SOLOW’ EP: First Listen

430 430 Tim Gauthier

keys-and-crates-hard-summer-2013-650Were someone to describe Keys N Krates as an artist who includes Diplo and Annie Mac as friends, one whose schedule includes appearances at festival stages like HARD, Mad Decent Block Party and Electric Zoo, and one who is signed to Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak label, you might have and idea of who this artist is. But as a live electronic band, Toronto-based trio Keys N Krates, are anything but a typical EDM act.

In fact, as they show on their new EP, SOLOW, out this Tuesday, there’s still a lot of room for originality in a genre typically defined by similarities. Check out the first listen of SOLOW here, on CODE.

Beatport Chart

knk-imageThe words “Dum Dee Dum” may conjure up images of a little girl frolicking through a field of daffodils (at least it does for me), but when you associate “Dum Dee Dum” as the newest release from Keys N Krates, the result is anything but innocent and flowery. A fiery track that has a steady anthemesque beat to it, “Dum Dee Dum” is as original as it is heavy and infectious. In support of this release, Keys N Krates have created a BEATPORT Chart that is sure to please. Featuring ROYAL-T, CASHMERE CAT, RL GRIME, DIPLO, RUSTIE and more, the August 2013 TOP 10 Beatport Chart from Keys N Krates is hyper and eclectic, filled to the brim with bossy beats and heavy bass. Run through your field of daffodils and over to Beatport to nab this hella tight chart, and prepare for the next wave of a Keys N Krates take over!

USA Today: 6 emerging artists to catch at Lollapalooza [Keys N Krates]

680 510 Tim Gauthier

While it’s all well and good to rattle off a list of accomplishments, sometimes it’s just easier to name-drop. Keys N Krates has toured and played alongside Bassnectar, Skrillex, Kid Cudi, Pretty Lights, Major Lazer, Girl Talk and Zeds Dead in recent years, and received support from notable electronic artists such as Diplo and TNGHT. There’s a smorgasbord of talent in this Toronto-based trio — Dave Matisse on keyboards, Adam Tune on drums and Jr. Flo on turntables — which has been blending electronic and trap music with rap beats since 2008. They played SXSW, Ultra and Wakarusa music festivals, and are getting ready to release their SoLow EP in September. (via USA Today)

Keys N Krates have been around for like, five years and it seems to me like there is no better time to become a super fan of this duo than right freaking now. With the release of “Treat Me Right EP” and its respective remixes (provided by the likes of GRANDTHEFT, LAZERDISK PARTY SEX, AND THUGLI), they’ve given us the gift of a low-key yet outrageously dance-worthy masterpiece. The tempo is steady, the vocal overlay isn’t overwhelming and gets straight to the point, and there is an overall feeling of hearing musical magic that just feels right; it’s memorable and oh-so-enjoyable without feeling like you’re getting punched in the face by basslines and wibbly wobbly wubs. Keys N Krates bring their unique minds and musical prowess together brilliantly, as proven by “Treat Me Right” in all of its mellow and perfectly executed magic.

♪ Out Now: AutoErotique & Felix Cartal – The Alarm Remixed

By now, I’m sure you’ve fallen in love with Felix Cartal and Autoerotique’s “The Alarm” (and if you haven’t, then shame on you). Whether you have or have not, prepare yourself to get stoked all over again because it’s been remixed, giving the already vibrant track three fresh new perspectives. The Erick Rincon 8Ball Bootleg is, in my humble opinion, the most eclectic; it almost has the vibes of a party in Cuba experiencing an air raid. With the Keys N Krates rendition, expect bass for days and the feeling of chills creeping down your fist pumping arms. Different still is the Charlie Darker remix, which lends a throwback early house music experience while maintaining the hyperactivity of the original track. It’s quite an accomplishment to take a piece that is already a mega anthem in its own right and turn it into a whole different work of art, but these three producers did just that and did it remarkably well.
