#FreeFriday Episode No. 097: Kenna – Relations (Kevin Focus Remix)

1920 1080 Tim Gauthier
“I’ve had some really awesome opportunities making music, but remixing Kenna, it personally was one for the books. I’ve been a uber huge fan of Kenna since his first album & to get the nod to be able to remix his Dim Mak debut, I was more than stoked! It was difficult choosing what to use from the original because I wanted to use it all. The end result was reusing some of the track percussion and I snatched a part of Kenna’s vocal that had resonated the most to me. I did my best to remold the track in a new light with heavy energy and into the guise of a Dim Mak banger… ‘Lets have Relations!'”Kevin Focus

A Future Soul Introduction from Kenna

Now that we’ve just about finished getting excited about the new divergences, tangents and confluences that resulted in the new styles and genres of 2013, it’s time to start coining some new ones. Future soul might not mean much to us now, but it sounds pretty exciting. And who better to give us a personal introduction than Grammy nominee Kenna.

“Pink Matter” – Frank Ocean

I think this song was overshadowed by the many other records that Frank has put out. I think it resonated with me because it reminded me lyrically of the things in my head that I may or may not ever want people to find out. Some insane things go through it. Outside of that, like I told Frank, he could sing the phone book and we would listen.

“I’m Into You” – Chet Faker

This dude has great tone. Not sure if this is “future soul” but it is soulful to me. I think we have a divergence in sound vs. genre. This is the type of record that bends the rules and this is the type of artist that leaves you wondering where his soul will lead us.

[sr_video][/sr_video]

“Treat Me Like Fire” – Lion Babe

Her name is Lion Babe. What man isn’t going to want to know what that sounds like. After you hear her though, you can feel her influences in the delivery of her melody, but the song is original. The video is raw and rad. Her name is Lion Babe, for the love of God.

[sr_video][/sr_video]

“Cold Nites” – How to Dress Well

A friend put me on to this. I think it just has a great deal of raw energy in it. The lyrics are bent towards the ethereal and allows you to morph it into your own life. The strength in it is its illusive quality – it’s just mesmerizing.

[sr_video][/sr_video]

“Love Is Still Alive” – Kenna

I’m biased on this one. Its one of my favorite songs because it is delimited. This song speaks of the dimensions in between communication and life. It challenges the sacred geometry of coming back from a death in love to find a resurrection.

[sr_video][/sr_video]

“Only When I Walk Away” – Justin Timberlake

This song is an evolution in Justin’s melodic journey. He challenged himself to meld worlds and bring angst to a beat with the R&B overtones. I don’t think production of this can get any better. The show version kills.

“It’s painstakingly obvious that Kenna wants to fuck you. Or at least in this song he does. With a galactic remix courtesy of Childish Gambino, the dude sure knows how to mix up funk, R&B and sex.”Noisey

Hip-hop recording artist and actor Childish Gambino adds nothing, but fire to Kenna’s “Relations,” the lead single on his recent EP: “Imitation Is Suicide: Chapter 1.” The official video for this epic collaboration was premiered today (November 12) on mtvU. The video takes a simple, but very effective approach, featuring Kenna, Childish, and two models/dances to complement them as they move and groove to the expertly crafted beat. This man, nor this project, should be slept on… Kenna ‘Land 2 Air Chronicles II: Imitation Is Suicide’

2146 1511 Nikki

[blockquote align=”right”]
“On ‘Love Is Still Alive,’ (taken from Imitation is Suicide EP series), the longtime friend of Pharell and Chad Hugo opines for love in an Emerson-inspired, harmony-soaked, haunting electronic forest, all produced by the singer himself. Were it not so solid on its own, the temptation to pull apart that vocal track and remix the hell out of ‘Love Is Still Alive’ would be hard to resist.” – BILLBOARD.COM

“Over some funky production from Chad Hugo of The Neptunes, Kenna channels a quirky Talking Heads vibe for ‘Relations,’…” – PIGEONS AND PLANES

In this day and age, it’s harder and harder to find great minds with progressive, forward-thinking ideas, especially in certain areas within the music industry, where shock value has a higher price tag than raw talent. So when someone like Kenna comes along, you should sit up and pay attention because you are not going to want to miss what he is bringing to the table. Ethiopian-born and Los Angeles-wise, Kenna is a philosophizing producer who approaches life and music with massive energy and passion, saying in an interview with WILD Magazine, “At a certain point you realize that God and the universe have conspired to give you all the tools and relationships to build the world you want to live in, and the success you feel is your purpose in life.” With a mindset like that, it’s no wonder Kenna has critics raving and fans of multiple genres taking notice of this Grammy-nominated artist on a mission. But what good is a load of talent if it’s not being used to call attention to a cause greater than one’s self? As a pioneer of the global clean water issue, Kenna devotes his time, resources, and status to make people more aware of the issue at hand and what to do about it. Sheesh! Does the guy ever sleep? Let’s recap: brilliant, endlessly talented, generous, and an activist? Time to look around, people, because Kenna is taking over.

“If you’re on the prowl for some deep bass and grind-hungry ladies, then look no further than Grammy-nominated artist Kenna’s new video for ‘Relations (An Ode to You and Me).'” – VIBE

“The EP offering features only three tracks, but that does not deplete the quality throughout the new and intriguing project. Released via Dim Mak, electronic-inspired production is a common theme throughout the short compilation…” – HYPETRAK

“Kenna’s one of those artists with his fingers in so many different fields that it’s hard to believe that he’s just one dude with two arms.” – KARMA LOOP
[/blockquote]

With his most recent and ambitious project, the “Imitation Is Suicide” three-part EP series, Kenna brings a plethora of genres under one roof with vastly different influences and inspirations.  “For me, this EP is about art and the influences that help shape my perspectives,” said Kenna“You can definitely hear the Rick James, The Cure and David Byrne influences, but you will also see the Buggles, David Lynch, Hitchcock and Warhol references as well. I know they say imitation is flattery, but without acknowledging your influences I think ‘Imitation is Suicide.’ Inevitably,” Kenna stated in an interview with hiphopsite.com. With ample singles to be pouring from “Imitation Is Suicide,” music blogs all across the board are absolutely amped. DJbooth.net says “the project will pack all the funky electronic grooves and memorable melodies we’ve come to expect from the currently-unsigned musical innovator,” while the music lovers over at stupiddope.com are saying “the EP is a rather dope collection of all new material from the singer/songwriter and producer, showing off his range, his vocal abilities and his influences.” Just type Kenna into your preferred search engine and watch the rave reviews roll in from hip-hop fans to house fans to just straight up music lovers; it’s becoming increasingly clear that Kenna has earned his way into our hearts and our speakers for very good reasons indeed.

[info_box_1 title=”ABOUT THE RELEASE”]
Land 2 Air Chronicles II is the second part of Kenna’s three EP series based on the Emerson essay Self-Reliance.  On this second installment, Imitation is Suicide, Kenna is stating the clear influences in his work to help define a musical compass while giving credit where credit is due.

Kenna stated, “Music icons like David Byrne and Rick James inspired Imitation is Suicide.  I think posing as an ‘original’ without acknowledging your influences is like killing yourself.  The chapters and art of this EP speak to those influences all while hopefully dancing between sonics and genres.”

Imitation Is Suicide (chapter one of three) is produced by Chad Hugo of the Neptunes/N.E.R.D. and Kenna.

Kenna has released his irreverent fun-loving first single, “Relations,” off of his latest EP, Land 2 Air Chronicles II – Imitation is Suicide, co-produced by Chad Hugo of the Neptunes/N.E.R.D., on Dim Mak Records.

Re•la•tions (noun): the way in which two or more people feel about and behave toward each other. “Relations” is about encouraging change through interaction between you and me, forging together a mixture of funk, R&B and hip-hop.

“Drunk on exhaustion and heavy bass driven beats equals RELATIONS. It was a one take verse on a David Byrne and Rick James inspired track. It’s just fun.”Kenna
