A Night In Review: Flosstradamus @ Club Nokia

“Club Nokia was the epicenter of Trap music Friday night, with big-time performances from AraabMuzik and Flosstradamus. There were also other great opening sets by Congorock, gLAdiator, Noizfiend, Alex Bustamove, and Mature Content. The night was full of the hard hitting bass and sway inducing beats that have become synonymous with the Trap sound. Araabmuzik was first to kick off the night and he didn’t disappoint.

Araabmuzik is the type of DJ who is so solid, that you know you’re going to have a good time no matter what when you listen to his music live. One of the reasons for this sure thing is that Araabmuzik mixes live using a MPC and so everything you are hearing is coming live from his hands to the speakers and then straight to your ears. Because every drum kick and sample is mixed live, it makes for a different type of set, where the beats and rhythm are on showcase instead of any big name song drops.

He opened his set with one of his tracks “Never Have to Worry,” and immediately the crowd started to get into what was a great constant track-to-track dance party. Araabmuzik showed great variety throughout the whole set, starting with slow deep bass only to speed up the tempo and then drop right back into a monster bass drop. Araab danced the night away while mixing but he never took his hands off the table and you could tell he enjoyed performing just as much as the audience enjoyed listening.  Towards the end of his set he introduced some noticeable tracks like Nero’s “Promises,” and Biz Markie’s “Let Me Clear My Throat.” All-in-all Araabmuzik’s set was a good mix of trap and other quicker electro beats.

Next up on the deck was headliner Flosstradamus. The DJ-duo is known for their hard hitting trap sets and that is exactly what they delivered. It was both a classic and unique set as the DJS dropped popular Trap tracks as well as some remixes that were unexpected. They opened up with Lana Del Rey’s “Videogames” and then mixed right into “Bugatti” by Ace Hood. Things got especially turned up when they dropped a trap remix of “Face Down, Ass Up” by Meek Mill and then launched into “What’s Your Fantasy” by Ludacris. In fact, Flosstradamus threw the beat down so hard during a mix of a new song with DJ Slink that the power actually blew out for a minute.

After the technical difficulty the duo launched back seamlessly into their set and hyped up the crowd with a remix of “Jah No Partial” by Major Lazer featuring Flux Pavillion. The rest of the set was a bevy of trap classics from Rick Ross, Waka Flacka, and Chief Keef to name a few. The highlight of the night was definitely when they dropped RL Grimes remix of “Satisfaction” by Benni Benassi and then spun right into a mix of Kanye West’s “Mercy,” and the classic techno song “Sandstrom,” by Darude.

Flosstradamus kept spinning through the night as they disappeared behind the fog that was being shot out in front of the DJ booth. When the lights hit the fog, it made them look even more awesome, as if they were illuminated in a cloudy rainbow of epic-ness.

It was a great night for trap music and EDM fans, and the crowd at Club Nokia seemed to be pleased, as they stayed through the night and seemed to dance forever.”  - Jenna Browning

Interview

Hi Salva, how are you doing on this fine and sunny day?
Chillin out :)

Whats the meaning behind the Pope as your profile photo? Do you just love him that much?
Yeah I wanted to be the pope when I was a little kid… Haha for real though.

How did the process of the Mercy remix you did with RL Grime go?
I had the idea when I was in the studio at Power 106 when Big Sean premiered the original “Mercy”.. I was sitting there remembering that Madlib and Dilla used that reggae sample before. Brought RL in to do the track with me because we started working together recently, I remixed one of his tracks for Wedidit and I was always playing his stuff out… so we collabed on it and didn’t think too much about it.. Just had fun with it and it came out really good.

Did you think the remix would take off like it did? How much did it impact your life/career?
Yeah it’s helped get me a lot of exposure for sure..thankful for that.. just really helped me get in front of bigger crowds — been DJing all my life so it was a good platform to show kids what I do.

Are you still running around coloring the streets? If so where can we see some of your work?
No haha I don’t paint.

J Dilla’s birthday was today (February 7th). How important is he as a person to you?
Really big influence on all of us who were into golden era Hip Hop to modern underground stuff…his productions, his rap. He produced so many classics, if you were into Hip Hop at all the past 20 years — whether you know it or not you love Dilla’s music.

Don’t you just hate that remake of “Fright Night”?
Ha yeah it really wasn’t the best.. The OG is my fave though, of course.

Are we going to see you scratching during the Dim Mak Sundays night this Sunday February 10th?
A little bit maybe, I’ve been kinda forced into using CD-Js as of late, turntables are dissapearing accross the world!!! :(

Would you say that Bucharest, Romania is the best place to party? And why?
Kids just go really hard there, and the average party goer probably knows more about new electronic music than I do…they’re just really hungry for what’s next there for some reason.

How awesome was it when Pusha T came and did his verse over your remix during RBMA Culture Clash?
Yeah that was probably one of the best things that came out of doing the “Mercy” remix for sure.. He’s the illest man what can I say!! Pusha just shines on everybody.

What are the future releases on the Frite Nite label you’d like to tell us about?
We have really cool things popping, more underground style — for instance Jimmy Edgar and Adbourke remixes of The Starship Connection record we did last year, and an EP from Ana Sia that is really cracking tribal bass stuff.

Are you excited for your show this Sunday? Any surprises up your sleeve?
Probably no Pusha T this time hahaha (but maybe again soon).. nah I’m just gonna do me, I’ve wanted to come play Drai’s for a minute.. feel it’s gonna be a good platform to play some big rap songs and some banging dance tracks too. Very excited… and it’s GRAMMY’S NIGHT!!
