Infected Mushroom brings us back into their personal studio space, showing an inside look at how their next single, Nation Of Wusses came into completion.
‘I want people to remember it,’ EDM up-and-comer tells MTV News of just-released album.
Though Miami Music Week is over, the spirit of Dim Mak’s presence is still standing. With Felix fresh off the beach and straight into his 2+ month “Different Faces Tour”, there isn’t much that can stop him from taking this industry hostage. MTV met up with Cartal during Dim Mak’s WMC kick-off party at Mansion (with Steve Aoki, Joachim Garraud, and others) to see what really went into the making of his 2nd full-length album:
“It’s been the last year of my life kind of putting this thing together,” Cartal said. “The record’s basically all that’s going on in my life. I want people to remember it, and hopefully it means something to them.”
MTV News was able to catch some of Cartal’s set at the National Hotel during Miami Music Week, and it was obvious that “Don’t Turn on the Lights,” featuring Polina, has become a certifiable breakthrough hit. But what was most surprising was how many of Cartal’s fans could be seen singing so many of his songs throughout the set.
“I play all the singles every set, and everyone was singing along today,” Cartal said. “I don’t think you can ever get tired of that feeling.”
He may not have to, because his new album is loaded with potential smashes, already finding tracks trickling into some sets of the biggest DJs in the world…

“We have just finished our video (online) for the track in Paris with a great cast of actors. The location of the shoot was a mental institution in the suburbs. It was wild!!!” ~ Alec Empire, Atari Teenage Riot
“Collapse of History” (Remixes, Pt. 1):
This is the first instalment of the two part Collapse of History EP, with the second to follow in April. Alec Empire: “Our new single is called Collapse of History! It is an anthem for our generation. Information overload in the digital age. The track has a big war chant, which went down extremely well with festival crowds since we started playing it live. Can’t wait to perform this at Coachella!!!
It’s another single that is sung by Nic Endo who takes ATR into a new direction. B52s, L7, riot grrrl, Blondie,
Deee-Lite were an inspiration. I had to do forty overdubs, because we thought it would be funny to have a
little army of Alec Empire clones singing along. The biggest inspiration for this song was probably the Atari
video game classic Pong. We did a remix contest, AND also got official remixes done by a number of amazing producers! The next two months of our campaign will focus on Collapse Of History! We are putting out this full on remix EP first, then will follow it up with the single later. It’s perfect for DJs to spin.”
Remixers include Christine (who have worked with Amon Tobin and Nag Nag Nag), StereoHeroes (M.I.A. and Pony Pony Run Run remixes), Sharkslayer (releases on the Kitsune and Yes, Yes labels), and Twist The Black
Box (noted for work with Diplo and Teeth).
With all the craziness that went down in Miami this past week…RollingStone managed to snap a few photos for their site.

He is good friends with indie electro superstars Steve Aoki and Diplo, and his tunes have been spun in clubs all over the world, but Vancouver electro producer Felix Cartal knows exactly where he wants his music to be played.
“I don’t want to hear my music in cool stores, I want to hear it in every-day stores,” Cartal says. “I want to hear my music when I’m eating at Milestones.”
In the Gastown apartment where he spends most of his time creating and remixing material on his computer, Cartal laughs. With little to no fanfare of his own, Cartal has been turning heads in the electronic dance music world.
What originally started as post-high school experimentation with computers after years of playing in punk bands in and around New Westminster soon became something that had a life of its own.

Felix Cartal – Different Faces
2012 marks an important year for Felix Cartal, as the first single off DIFFERENT FACES, his new album has demonstrated, his sound has matured into simply put: memorable music. This single, titled “Don’t Turn On The Lights”, featuring a vocal from Ultra Music topliner Polina, has already garnered support from MTV, BPM (Sirius XM) and Muchmusic, who have all added the video and song into heavy rotation.
Not wanting to slow down, Cartal maintains an aggressive release schedule leading up to the drop date of DIFFERENT FACES, his second album for Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records in late March 2012. The second single “DOMO” taps into aggressive sounds and Japanese pop culture, whereas the third single “Black To White” featuring Miss Palmer falls back onto the pop influences of the first single. Branded with cute girls, b&w photography and red balloons, the concept for the album is strong, consistent and memorable.
Growing up in Vancouver, Felix’s initial mark on the dance scene was with his debut EP in 2009 Skeleton. Steve Aoki and MSTRKRFT were some of the earliest supporters of Cartal’s sound, and he released his debut LP Popular Music on Aoki’s Dim Mak Records. The record featured several big tunes such as “Love” which was featured on the I Love Techno 2010 compilation, “World Class Driver,” which startled the internet with the video’s shocking take on seniors amongst the drug scene, and “Volcano” which featured vocals from an unlikely collab of Johnny Whitney from post-hardcore stars The Blood Brothers.
In 2011, Felix progressed his sound with a surprise hit “The Jocker” which found its way into the sets of anyone from Benny Benassi to Diplo to Laidback Luke. Transcending across all scenes of dance music, this tune was remixed by the likes of John Dahlback and Clouds (TURBO), and helped push Felix into both the American and European festival circuit, securing slots at Electric Daisy Carnival, Tomorrowland and the mainstage of Electric Zoo.
After that full year of relentless touring, Cartal returns to what he loves to do, which is create full albums, and DIFFERENT FACES does not disappoint. A balance of instrumental and vocal tracks keeps the record interesting and energetic. Enlisting the vocals of Sebastien Grainger of DFA1979 and Maja Ivarsson of The Sounds, Cartal continues his trend of collaborating with unpredictable vocalists in the dance scene. The product sounds effortless though, a mix of different ideas, made for different ears on different faces.
