Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945-1980

Tim Gauthier

Pacific Standard Time is a collaboration of more than fifty cultural institutions across Southern California, which are coming together for six months beginning October 2011 to tell the story of the birth of the Los Angeles art scene and how it became a major new force in the art world. Each institution will make its own contribution to this grand-scale story of artistic innovation and social change, told through a multitude of simultaneous exhibitions and programs. Exploring and celebrating the significance of the crucial post-World War II years and beyond, Pacific Standard Time encompasses developments from modernist architecture and design to multi-media installations; from L.A. Pop to post-minimalism; from the films of the African-American L.A. Rebellion to the feminist happenings of the Woman’s Building; from ceramics to Chicano performance art, and from Japanese-American design to the pioneering work of artists’ collectives. Initiated through $10 million in grants from the Getty Foundation, Pacific Standard Time involves cultural institutions of every size and character across Southern California, from Greater Los Angeles to San Diego and Santa Barbara to Palm Springs.

Tim Gauthier

Dimmak.com offers you an exclusive free download of “White Noise/Red Meat”(Bassjackers Remix). The remix was streamed on Bassjackers Sound Cloud and received many stamps of approval. The remix is tight and restrained in some parts, yet loose and free in others, seeping raw bass like your favorite banger should.

WARNING: “White Noise / Red Meat” is a catchy one, so be prepared to have it stuck in your head.

Atari Teenage Riot live review in Rock-A-Rolla magazine

Tim Gauthier

From the magazine:
Atari Teenage Riot’s decision to reform this year could not have arrived at a more opportune time, with a rise in conservatisim occurring not only in the UK and Germany, but all throughout Europe. In this climate we need bands like ATR reminding us that it’s necessary to lash out against the system sometimes. However, this is ATR Mk.II. Only Alec Empire remains from their original incarnation, but it’s like those golden times were just yesterday for him tonight. Inciting the crowd into near-riots, he’s an inimitable frontman, his every utterance laced with indignation, even if he does keep the political polemic to a minimum. Taking over duties for Hanin Elias and Carl Crack are Nic Endo and CX KiDTRONiK respectively, with Endo undoubtedly being the dominant force of the two. She’s icily imposing and possesses a scream that could start a war, but thankfully tonight she is content simply with winning over a sceptical crowd. Despite the protests of a few older fans, the new incarnantion are warmly welcomed with pitting and dancing alike, ‘No Remorse (I Wanna Die)’ and ‘Atari Teenage Riot’ inciting levels of frenzy hitherto unseen in this venue. Seizure-inducing levels of strobe lighting are joined by breakbeats, jungle, drum’n’bass and caustic guitar samples at every turn, providing enough variety and energy to prove that this is no mere nostalgia trip for them, this is a return to arms. They’re not the same band that baited censors or incited riots in the 90’s, but their message has remained intact and that’s what we really need from them. – David Bowes

Edifier Portable Boombox

Tim Gauthier

Check out this portable Bluetooth boombox by Edifier, basically a tube with with a large aluminum handle.

The tube shape resembles their Aurora tabletop system, however sound for the boombox comes from two reflective cones in the center. I’m not quite sure how it’s powered..But it being bluetooth makes for a pretty rad, modern and slim boombox.
